On the June test I scored a 28 on the ACT Reading, my lowest score. The year before that test I scored a 27, and throughout the year I spent a lot of time trying to improve reading. Took nearly 20 tests and went over mistakes repeatedly but no major result.
Any good recommendations for improving my reading from where I am at? Any really good books that helped you score up to 33+ on the reading section, or was it all natural?
Is there anybody who used to score low on reading but can now score up to 33+ on the section?
What I’ve learned is that it’s not about your mistakes. Understanding why the answer you got was wrong is only one step to the improvement process. You need to ask yourself: HOW can I avoid making that mistake ever again? What strategies/techniques could I implement? Write one idea down for each type of question you miss. You need to figure out the reason you missed a question, but more importantly you need to figure out how to prevent it from happening again.
For example: I missed a question about the type of architecture used in a specific store. In the same paragraph they mentioned architecture of something similar, but not directly what they were asking for. The problem was I hurried and answered what I remembered from the passage. But I mixed them up! Silly mistake! I wrote down that day to ALWAYS verify an answer with evidence from the passage. It is always worth it to double check your answer. Chances are you will find the part of the passage you need quickly. If not, come back to it. You do not want your score to drop a point just because you were too lazy to check an answer with the passage.
You see? I learned all that from one question and I hardly ever miss silly recall questions now because I always look for the evidence in the passage instead of relying on my faulty memory. Some people don’t need to do this, but that’s what I needed to do. You need to personalize your techniques as much as possible. Good luck
NOTE: I went from a 25 on the February ACT to a 33 on the June ACT for the Reading section through only 4 practice Reading tests over the course of a week. I used practice tests from the Princeton Review 1400+ questions book from 2012 (my older sister’s unused book).
I used the Princeton review book. this was my first ACT and I prepped for about 2 months. I got a 26 in reading on my first go when my first practice test had me at a 23. A huge thing about reading is reading it CAREFULLY and making sure you read each passage correctly. Sometimes it helps to read the questions for the passage first then read so you know what to look for.
Reading has always been my worst section due to me always losing focus about 3 paragraphs in. I’ll then notice I’m unfocused and reread the entire passage. Lord help me
Practice tests (Google & free) helped me go from 31ish to 36.
Reading books will help you more in the long run, but when you want to quickly raise a test score, there is certainly some merit to just learning the test.
Good luck!
