@Daisybug Pls, Daisy, pls ;_;
Okay so, I realize that application season is about to be over and I’m sorry I wasn’t here to answer any questions that you may have had. However, what I can do, is tell you about IMSA. Hit me up with any questions and concerns you have while you wait for your letters.
Also, come to imsa wf for tips from emily jia!!
reading all of these resumés… wow i feel basic
i have a question; could you include like, you being a certified app programmer in the Apple store or you doing online volunteering and stuff like that ? (i don’t do them but I’m curious)
You can include anything tbh. As long as you think its important.
@kidfood Hi! I’m applying to IMSA this year! My practice SAT scores are Cr: 620 Math: 560. I’m in Science Olympiad for two years now, Cross country, swimming, track and field, active library volunteer. I have had good grades in Science and English for the last years (A) but a B in math all the time! My teacher loves my essays. I have quite a few academic awards: Kumon, President’s Education, Excellence in Math and Science. However, I lack in awards for technology. I am in Tech Club at my high school. What do you think my chances are?
@daisybug Do essays/recs really matter more than the SAT? If so, how can I make my essays and my application be loved by the application committee? Do you have any advice?
@jxuwyrm Any advice on how to really make my essays shine?
@aang1100 You’re reading score is fine however you math score is pretty low and math is of course if looked upon as the more important one in between those two. Of course, it also depends on what math class you’re in and what type of level it is. Now suppose you’re in algebra 2 with a B and a 560. You have a really huge disadvantage. If you’re in let’s say geometry with a b and a 560 sat, it’s more understandable however still around 120 below average. Lastly, if you’re indian or let’s just generalize to asian with that math sat score, you are at even a larger disadvantage if you are in algebra 2. If you are in a class below algebra 2, worry less about the math sat.
@aang1100 Essays are important and are far more memorable than an SAT score. You’re more than a number, right? So just be genuine in your essays and let your love for math and science shine through. In the end, true passion is picked over book-smarts.
@aviSaxena33 I actually took another practice sat test today. Math: 630 Cr: 660 Yeah. Fairly large boost. I am in Algebra 2, with a B first semester. Yes, I’m Indian.
@Daisybug All right! Thanks
Okay so, if I’m to do an analysis of the components of the application and assign a rating of importance I would say:
Essays - Don’t mess these up. This is your greatest opportunity to show admissions that you deserve to be here over the other applicants. How do you do this? Be passionate and honest.
SAT - Not that big of a deal. This varies by region and I feel as if it’s more of a tie-breaker than a hugely deciding factor.
Grades - Grades are a window to how you do in school and give a good idea as to how you’ll perform at IMSA. You don’t need straight As to get into IMSA but you should still be on top of things. It’s a bit late for first semester grades but do note that you still need to maintain decent grades to be accepted, so don’t just blow off second semester.
Recommendations - These are also super important. Your teachers/principal/counselor is given the task of telling admissions how great you are. Once again, it might be a bit late but you should have chosen/should choose people who know you well and can give a lot of detailed information.
Activities - Put down whatever you want. This just adds to the passion and devotion to math and science portion of the application as well as showing you are a well rounded student.
TL;DR: Be honest, do your best.
Additional Tip- Remember, if you want to become an IMSA student, you got to act like on. Procrastinate on your apps till the last minute. Then they’ll know your tru.
Just curious, anyone else in AP HuGe? The final was awful for it.
