IMSA Applicant Class of 2018

@dimsumnoodles‌ I expect a culture shock, my school is about 98% white since I live in a rural, farming community. There are literally acres and acres of farmland right next to my high school. This should help my chances, but my teacher said she has seen some kids go to IMSA from our school, so IMSA may have higher expectations for me vs previous admits. @priyaluvsbooks‌ Your GPA is fine, last year you were very nearly admitted in a highly competitive area, so this year you should have no problem getting in. My best chance is the waitlist, I know I am not getting admitted at first.

I think the biggest thing in between this lull of application submission and decisions is that we continue learning regardless of the decision. IMSA doesn’t dictate our success so we shouldn’t let it.

@kidfood‌ Not too far ahead of u on the sat scores. Same math and only 40 pts higher on CR

@dimsumnoodles‌ Asians make up approx. 8.2% of my school

Great point @theeedog‌. @kidfood, good point about priya, if she almost made it last year with one B it shouldn’t make a difference this year then. No one knows for sure. I am just basing from what I observed. As avisaxena said, just consider the competition.

@nickster12 yes, it’s just math, science and english. Idk, i’ve been stressing out about my GPA ever since i submitted my apps :persevere:

Idk, I got the 8th grade interview. Don’t know how many people got that tho so…

You guys are going to be so stressed out. Results are not till May 15. Relax.

But i emailed the addmissions counselor who said that since i was admitted into the 8th grade interview- my application is immediately taken out of the applicant pool to be reviewed separately. Don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad

I haven’t heard of that where they take out applications from general pool. Relax.

I’m an 8th grader, and I’m definitely not getting in since I always have a 610 on practice tests for SAT math. I took the sat already, waiting on the results but i knew i blew it off. my extracurriculars aren’t amazing either; science fair for 7th and 8th . i got into state last year and got gold. spelling bee winner district level this year, speech, yearbook, president of NJHS, and math bowl. you could say im the best student in my middle school but i attend a crappy middle school so… yeah. my essays were nothing in comparison to all of your essays and my teacher recs. are decent i guess. im probably attending a crappy high school since my parents are poor and tbh i have grown numb about education. i always worry if i’ll be getting into a good high school or good college but seeing that those chances are slim, I try not to care anymore. i’ll be relying instead on self education because yes, i’m angry for being not privileged. i’m angry that i couldnt move to a better area because my parents are too poor. but i know i am not entitled to anything, so yeah. sorry for ranting out like that but i’m just done with life.

At least you can still apply next year. Relax people.

@vniatge‌ Hey, use that to motivate yourself further. There is no reason you can’t be successful without going to IMSA or a good high school. Heck, if you are at the top at a mediocre high school colleges will see that and it gives you a better chance than someone who is middle of the pack at the #1 high school in Illinois.

@vniatge‌ From the way you describe your situation, if you keep up the grades and success, you can have an easy path to a full scholarship at least at U of I Urabana.

thanks guys

IMSA gives you an edge at U of I. Don’t expect scholarships from U of I though. Illinois is kinda broke. But remember there is a ton of colleges that offer financial aid to academically talented students.

What is your local high school @vniatge‌

Yoo, take a chill pill. Do something fun with your lives and don’t worry about IMSA apps! The die have been cast and all you can do now is wait for results. So, once again, just relax and maybe hang out with your friends or watch some movies like PK.

@jxuwyrm‌ BTW that movie is a HUGE rip off of Life of Pi, most Indian movies now are just based of american movies. @vnitage Just because you don’t have as many opportunities as everyone, doesn’t mean that you can’t get in, it only shows IMSA that despite all your hardships, you manage to get where you are right now. If you read a little bit further back, I am also at a disadvantage because of parents’ decisions and my school. Where you are from and what opportunities you have doesn’t determine success, it’s the things you do with those circumstances.

@nickster12‌ One of my cousin’s friend came from India last year and did his senior year at hoffman with a 3.0 gpa and got a full scholarship to U of I comp science even though his parents made 100k per year. Another of his friends have a 3.1 gpa and got into U of I comp science full scholarship with a household income of 65k. Both Indian, both parents working.
