This is a great recource for me and all the 8th graders, I’m guessing.
I like pretty much all of the popular music right now. My spotify list is filled with artists like sia, maroon 5, and a bunch more. I know I ain’t getting in but I’ll let you know when that comes
Funny, no one I know seems to listen to pop anymore. I guess all my friends are music dorks…
@YoloSwagMaster dude your sat score, gpa and app as a whole pretty much garuntee an acceptance… what are you TALKING about!!!
@YoloSwagMaster It would be a great surprise if you didn’t get in…
@yeldarb1 That is a great SAT score! Certainly better than mine, I’m sure that you will do well in the admissions process.
Hello, I’m interested in gauging my chances of being invited to IMSA for the class of 2018. I’m a 9th grader applying from New Trier (Winnetka), if that affects admissions in any way.
My SAT scores are as follows: 730M, 610CR, 630W.
I’ve been a part of math team since the 7th grade, and am taking the highest level of every course offered at my school.
My main extracurriculars are track and chess. I’ve run track consistently since 5th grade, and my times are relatively fast (55sec 400m, 2:10 800m). I have a National Master title from the USCF (United States Chess Federation) and am currently the highest rated player in IHSA chess. Will these count towards offsetting my slightly lower SAT scores? IMSA has a chess team and they’re losing their top board.
My grades are all right, not anything exceptional. No Bs throughout junior high (7th/8th), but unfortunately they’ve slipped the first semester of high school. I got two Bs and two As.
What is your opinion on my chances? Thank you!
@Georgules Your app seems to be really up in down in ways when I read it at first. First I read the New trier part and the first thought is it will be very hard from there because it’s a great and top school and then u have very good sat scores so then my thoughts got more positive. Of course, your national title is going to offset pretty much anything really that seems to go down like your freshman grades so if I were you, I wouldn’t really worry at all about admissions.
@Georgules Your GPA is slightly below average, as is your CR score. Your math score is above average, and your ECs look great. The math score is better than the CR score is bad, if that makes any sense, so you come out ahead there. Location might put you at a slight disadvantage, but overall your chances are pretty good. The deciding factors are essays and teacher recs, though, which you didn’t mention. And let’s face it, we could know everything there is to know about the admissions process, and still have no chance of guessing who’ll get in.
Idk know guys, @priyaluvsbooks @theeedog. Even if I do I ain’t accepting. I don’t feel my essay was that exceptional.
I have a question guys. Does anyone here know if there is someone who was able to get into IMSA with SAT scores CR570 and M590 (8th grade)?
I think being from NT is an advantage. I know of only one kid from there so in a way it is “underrepresented”. He had worse stats and was on waiting list and he got out of it pretty early. My sibling does not know any from NT. A national title trumps everything I think, especially in an academic-like activity.
@madmax1503 - you need 700s in math at least as an 8th grader based on shmen (the kids who skipped 9th grade are called shmens) that I know. If you dont make it this year, I think it sets you up next year so you have the experience. If you can jump to high 600s for M and maintain really good GPA you will be in a good spot. Also try to do some math/science EC or anything you are passionate in.
again these are anecdotal evidence and based on one data point (your SATs). For all we know, everything else in your app is excellent. That is why these “chance me” threads should be taken lightly.
@Georgules DO YOU KNOW SOFIA BAUMANN?? SHE’S MY BEST FRIEND AND SHE MOVED…
but do you know her? cuz if you do you should totally talk to her about this and show her this post…
I think I’ve heard that name before. She might be my World History class, and it sounds silly that I wouldn’t know that, but the classes at NT are so lecture-based you can’t get to know anybody you wouldn’t know from sports and extracurriculars
It’s aggravating me how my teachers haven’t submitted my reccs yet. I remind them in person and it seems like they are aware, but no action. How about you guys?
Yes! All my teachers with the exception of my physics teacher submitted the recommendation within 2 days of SchoolRecs sending out the email. I’ve reminded my physics teacher twice already, once last Friday and just another time today. The deadline is getting dangerously close and I’m pretty worried
I have my math and science accepted, but not submitted. And the optional rec I’m not so worried about, but she is aware of the rec, but hasn’t accepted or submitted yet.
I just have my optional and I’m freaking out because we don’t have school thursday and friday so i can’t remind them again in person… though i reminded him today…
@aminorspark I wasn’t sure how to include anything about my essays within the application I posted here because it’s not up for me to evaluate. For the essay in which it asked for an innovation, I wrote about microprocessors and also integrated some of that into my other essays.
As for my teacher recommendations, I think (and can only hope) that my math teacher wrote a neutral review. I don’t think I showed him that I was very interested in his class or math in general, because I went and found help elsewhere. The times at the beginning of the year when I tried to develop a relationship I felt that he was always trying to chase me out of his office ASAP, and many of my classmates had the same negative experience. My physics teacher and English teacher were more approchable, and I saw my English teacher after every essay, and talked to my physics teacher frequently about challenge problems, exams, etc. I think that the English teacher’s review will be more positive than the physics teacher’s, but both should be generally positive. I had an optional recommendaiton written by my writing teacher from last year about my interest in technology, since I wrote a pretty lengthy and detailed research paper for him last year on the topic.
What is your evaluation now, knowing about the rest of the application? Thanks!
As a side note, there’s another person in both my math and physics classes who’s also applying. I don’t know much about him except that our grades in math are similar. According to someone who knows him well, his only extracurricular is tennis but stopped within the last half year or so. His grades would probably have a slight edge on mine, SAT scores should be similar. Giving these conditions, would he edge me out in the admissions process? Thanks!
