IMSA Applicant Class of 2018

hoping that the snow won’t stick :frowning:

Just got an email about not having my 7th-grade transcripts. I am pretty worried now since it is spring break and the counselor probably will not look at her email.

sorry to hear :frowning: is there a phone number she can be reached at, or someone else who can get the transcripts? @kidfood‌

call them and tell them that she is not responding and if you can turn them in in a week
@kidfood

I talked to admissions and they just said ASAP which is good I guess. There is no direct phone number I could call her with. I have spring break and IMSA is live streaming clash of halls today at 7:30 so I will be watching that. Anyone else?

yeah probably. What’s the link?

Are you guys doing anything interesting for spring break?

You mean other than staying home and eating?

@dimsumnoodles‌ I have increased my chai tea intake over spring break  …

Do you guys know if the fact that I’ve completed AP Calculus BC and the classes before that will help my application? Because I know my SAT scores weren’t too great so I was wondering if that would help. I reallyyy want to get in. [-O<

@yka101‌ yeah the fact that you are an eighth grader and taking those courses is great, let alone your school allowing you to take them. But dont sweat it if you dont get in, you still have 9th grade which is a fun year and I feel like going to IMSA with people your age will be more enjoyable. That high school experience is nice to have.

@yka101‌ Depends how common it is for students to be taking such high-level classes. If no one’s ever been in those classes as eighth graders before, then yes, it might help you.

Guys- relax, everything will work out just fine.Going to IMSA is one of the greatest decisions I have ever made and it has been a life-changing experience. But it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get in- the sooner you come to terms with that, the easier the wait will be. I recommend that all of you make a private list of reasons why you like your homeschool (ie friends, family, free-time). Understand that normal high schools give you more free-time to pursue your passions outside of school, whereas at IMSA you will live and breathe school and hard work. Both look amazing on a college application, so please relax. I know it’s CRAZY hard to wait for another month to find out, but try to enjoy your current school. Man, I WISH someone had told me to enjoy my last few weeks of “normal high school”. It’s like when a grown-up tells you that you’re going to miss being a kid and you don’t believe them at the time. For many of you, these will be your last few weeks of not having to try very hard to get straight A’s and IMSA can be incredibly stressful (worth it, but stressful nonetheless). So try to forget about the application for now, go outside, play a sport, do what you love, eat tasty food, sleep in, whatever you want. All of you are very smart and talented kids and IMSA or not you’ll all end up in great colleges with a bright future ahead of you. If you really want someone to talk to about this crazy process or if you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out to me at dbugarin@imsa.edu. Good luck everyone, I promise the wait will go by quickly!

@Daisybug Last question  If you do go to IMSA then is it like a fresh start? When you apply to colleges do you only send in the grades you received at IMSA or do you send the grades from 9th grade as well?

@priyaluvsbooks- Your 9th grade transcripts will also carry over to college applications and will be a part of your cumulative GPA when you apply. Keep in mind though that most colleges will focus more on the grades that you get later in high school, so in a way your IMSA grades will be more important than your home school grades.

Hi guys! I know I’m late on this thread but I’m maddi. Seeing you guys talk about your sat scores definitely made me nervous because although I am in algebra 2, math isn’t my strong point (science is my passion) and I only got a 590 math sat. However, I got a 690 on the cr portion. I might be good to go with those scores anyways, beause I am a minority and I’ve done the PROMISE programs at imsa, so people on the admissions board know me. My teacher recs should have been good and I had a ton of activities even though I only had around 5 awards. I know I had really original essays, and I’m sure they were good, and my grades were average. I’m not saying you’re wrong but I think you guys are thinking too hard about how SAT scores affect admission decisions. I’ve even talked one on one with admissions counselors and everyone always says that it’s not just about quantitative data, it’s about the whole package. That’s just me though! I’ll post whether or not I’ve gotten in when my letter comes in May! I hope to see some of you guys then

@ptvnicorn Hi!! It is about the whole package. But the thing is that most of us (if not all of us) here are the majority at IMSA. as a result, out SAT scores need to be somewhat high if we should apply. But your application sounds really good!!

@ptvnicorn‌ - the fact that the admission people know you is a huge advantage! You are more than what they see on paper. Good luck to you. It may not be a long wait.

@priyaluvsbooks. I agree with Daisy. Some universities do not even look at freshman grades. An IMSA “GPA” is calculated when you start applying or planning to apply to colleges and it only includes IMSA grades. This grade is simply used so you can see acceptance history in Naviance to give you and idea about IMSA accepted history. A great freshman grade history would help though especially in highly selective universities.

@priyaluvsbooks‌ I get that, but you shouldn’t be worried, your scores are higher than those of the outgoing seniors at most public high schools. Even though I’ve been told stories of people with perfect 800s not getting in because they didn’t put work into the rest of the application. You seem really dedicated though, which is good because your sat scores plus your love for imsa makes it really likely you’ll get in. I’m excited for you
