IMSA Applicant Class of 2018

@lsutiger25 u wouldn’t know if u were declined until move in day anyway

@lsutiger25 Google Science Fair would be a good addition to an application. You have to show passion, not genius scientific ability. I would suggest, if you have not, doing IMSA summer programs, Science Olympiad and Math Team to get that part of your application.

@aang1100 I am currently doing summer@imsa  Will this boost my application greatly as well?

sure @aang1100 @rialbhu give me your usernames

@Isutiger Anything you do will affect your application. However maintaining your grades and have a good sat score is also very important. Extracurriculars matter but only to a certain extent. If your GPA is down then they will have some doubts about accepting you. So work hard to keep it up in 8th grade and 9th grade as you have a significantly lower GPA than many of the applicants.

@priyaluvsbooks sure same as username here, rialbhu

How much would my GPA boost up if I get 4.0 whole semester for 8th grade. Also, do people actually make it in with my GPA, and what do they do usually that makes them in

I feel like I ruined my life because of stupid mistakes I made in 6th grade. 6th grade I had a crappy GPA of 3.4. 7th grade I had a GPA of 3.7. I didn’t know much about IMSA during this time so I felt that these grades weren’t that big of a deal. I later found out about IMSA and eager to apply. But then I realized my GPA will stop me from stepping foot in this prestigious school

@lsutiger25 Hey, you are freaking out way too much. Stop stressing at this point. I had solid B’s in math in 7th, 8th and half of 9th. Don’t worry about 6th or 7th. Keep straight A’s in 8th/9th (Whichever year you are applying).

IMSA knows people’s attitudes and work ethics change. Especially during middle/high school. B’s don’t stop you from getting in.

  1. Keep your grades up.
  2. Don't constantly calculate GPA; focus on A's in all classes, especially Math Science and English
  3. Continue out of school programs: (Sports, Science/Math)
  4. Read about College essay writing, and try putting your thoughts down on paper. Get practice!
  5. SAT Prep. Aim for at least 610 in both. Do not slack in CR; and don't waste time on Writing.

@lsutiger25 Work really hard and show your drive. Those essays can and probably will make it-or break it for you.
You must demonstrate a real, honest passion to learn, all subjects, not just M&S.

Make IMSA love you. Do this, and you will step foot into this prestigious school.

@lsutiger25 relax, dude. i got some low grades in 7th grade (we’re talking a C in MATH one quarter) and i got in. you need to stop freaking out- just do your best and do what makes you happy, and imsa will see that you are passionate about the things that you do. don’t worry about trying to make the perfect application- district 204 has great schools and you can do very well there, its not like imsa is your only option for success. so don’t stress, just do what you like to do and work hard. if it’s meant to be, you will get in.

Ok I feel better now knowing that you guys made it in without straight A’s. It’s just Avi kind of confused me talking about how GPA is the most important component. I feel better now. Before I was really sad because I felt I could never make it in then

I had crap grades too, which is why i got waitlisted. But i also got 720 in both math and CR, so that prob helped a ton. What goes on in the kik chat anyway?

@Isutiger25 Your GPA would be a 3.7. I’m sorry to say this but that’s a pretty low GPA compared to most of the 8th grade applicants as well as the 9th graders. And IMSA judges 8th graders on a harder basis than 9th graders. However if you applied in 9th grade and had a 4.0 in both 9th and 8th grade than you would have a 3.9. Don’t give up hope yet! I got in with a 3.933 so a 3.9 will be fine as long as your SAT score is in the 700 range and you have a good amount of extracurriculars and well written essays.

@lsutiger25 Good. GPA is important, but IMSA wants “Kyle” to come to their school, not “2400”

@priyaluvsbooks I understand but lots of people on this form made it in with like a 3.6 GPA like me right. It’s not like impossible to make it in with a low GPA. There are other factors to get in right?

@Isutiger25 plenty! And first of all I believe you are calculating your gpa with all of your classes. However IMSA only considers math, science and english grades. Second of all, other things are very important in the application. The way IMSA “grades/ranks” the application is through assigning each part a score from 20 to 80. There a three parts. One part contains your GPA, reccomendations, extracurriculars. The second part is your SAT score and the third part is your essays. Now. As you can see your GPA is a very small part of the application. Suppose that you get a score of 50 for your first part because of the somewhat lowish gpa but then receive 70s - 80s on the other two parts (SAT and essays) then it evens out.

@lsutiger25 Certainly not impossible. My GPA was probably not much higher than yours, and my SAT’s were fairly low. (M:610 CR: 600)

@priyaluvsbooks I messaged you my username.

@aang1100 Ik! I got it. Sorry my phones with my brother so I’ll add you when i’ve got the chance!
