Imsa applicant class of 2019

They’re above average which is good.

You guys really need to stop stressing over your SAT scores so much. Out of the application, that’s one of the things they look at least. They mostly care that your SAT score isn’t totally tank.

What would be a totally tank SAT score? Just to get a feel… :-/

Are you applying to IMSA as well? @javascript

I mean there’s no exact number but a student has been accepted with a total SAT score of about 900 before. Oftentimes how you do on the SAT isn’t your fault so they don’t make that a major part of what determines whether you get accepted or not.

Yes I am applying this year, taking SAT in January. I am 8 grader :-B …it is my dream to go to IMSA, so can not wait till 9 grade… sorry

@notarapper Well that 900 person was probably from some area like Carbondale or something like that. Like, in Naperville it’s pretty rare to find someone get into IMSA with even like 1150.

@javascript I applied last year as well, try to get into the 8th Grade Interview. It is very helpful and you can sit down with the admissions counselor that deferred you and why she did it. It also looks good to check that box in your 9th Grade App. Do you have a general idea as to what your SAT will be?

@yoloswagmaster I am getting around 650-700 on a couple of practice SAT tests. I understand I have a very little chance to get in this year…, so if not IMSA, I will be attending a sport-oriented public high school. I am taking math class there (2 grades ahead). Also I am taking 9 grade biology online, since they do not offer advanced science class in my school… only boring science… :-< I am 3 hours away from Chicago. Nobody from here applying to IMSA as far as I know…

@javascript I was in the same exact situation as you were in 8th grade, my high school is very sports oriented and not very much academic. I am also taking math courses 2 years ahead and took Bio online in 8th grade. I was deferred but invited to the 8th Grade Interview and she basically told me you didn’t get in because your SATs weren’t good enough. I got a 650 Math and 600 Reading

@yoloswagmaster It is interesting! So what SAT score do you think I should I aim to?

Honestly, everyone I’ve met that got into IMSA as an 8th grader had a composite Score of 2100+. But I’ve only seen 3 people. Lol

@javascript

@yoloswagmaster ok, got it… will try to do my best on SAT, all I can do. Being from academically disadvantaged school does not help though. I feel like I was wasting my time attending public school. Now I have to catch up by my own. Why would they even have such a “simplified” programs at schools? I came from another country and it is much harder school system there, 2 foreign languages from 1 grade. It is super easy schools in the USA in comparison :expressionless:

Oh, where are you from @javascript

@YoloSwagMaster I am from Russia, but I am in Illinois semi-rural public school system for years… Just recently realized that education you getting here is highly depend on school you are in. I know people from my school with straight A’s and tunk state test scores which was not very challenging tests at all…

SAT scores aren’t compared between people in the sane area. Just try to do well on the SAT. Honestly, I went through the process and I know what dozens of people in my class got and what their overall application looked like. The SAT isn’t that important. Also don’t sell yourself short for being an eighth grade. At IMSA, we call people who get accepted in eighth grade “shmen”, and we currently have 24 shmen in my class. I’m also pretty sure some got accepted but didn’t decide to go, and there was one who went to Excel but didn’t pass Excel, so she’s guaranteed to get to come back next year. A lot of 8th grades do get accepted. @javascript

@notarapper thanks! you inspired me!
Well, I am a professional musician: play piano professionally, most saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, bari), clarinet, bass clarinet, learning organ. My parents can not afford to buy a harp for me :)… I am in a professional jazz band here and also made all-state band audition as an 8th grader. Do you think it will help me to get accepted? Or IMSA is not interested in music much? I love science more than music thouth :slight_smile:

@notarapper ok so hold up… Does IMSA only selects a certain amount of people in each school. Some say they do; others say they don’t. Like, Bruh metea has 15 people applying, so does that mean they will only choose 5 because they want to keep the 1 to 3 ratio?

@javascript It helps but it’s not a major help. It’s still a significant help in your application, but that doesn’t necessarily set you ahead of someone who doesn’t even play in band. And if you get accepted, just be warned that the band departnent here is terrible and pretty much all of us dislike the director. Lower your expectations to that, then lower it even more because that’s how it was when I got here haha. But yeah, band isn’t that big of a thing here, and we have a jazz band but it’s student run and it’s pretty small so far.

@floridagators100 That’s 100% false. They don’t keep the ratio constant in each school intentionally. If all 15 are really candidates, they’ll take all 15. But they could also end up taking none. It really depends on the applications and the location, but not the school.
