Imsa applicant class of 2019

@javascript Also I wouldn’t say you play anything professionally because you’re still in eighth grade. Just because you might do performances or play in a good jazz band doesn’t mean you’re a professional musician. A lot of people at IMSA play piano, and a lot of them could also claim they’re professional. If you put that on your application, I would take it off because the admissions board is also looking at the way you speak of yourself.

@notarapper Good to know about band at IMSA.
Also the only reason I said I play professionally is because it is my job and I get payed for playing piano at church and I get payed for gigs during jazz festivals. I did not put this info in my application though.

@javascript One way or another, that doesn’t mean professional. A lot of high school students get paid to perform. It’s not really a big deal. And it’s not really going to help at IMSA.

@notarapper So I made a website through various coding languages which basically sold mine craft servers to others. I basically bought a big server for a low price and resold parts of the server for a higher price. This was fully automated and I got 200 dollars profit. I donated my funds to a charity. I had to close the site down due to personal issues. Does this have anything to do with IMSA?

I would say that you can very briefly mention it (I don’t recommend saying the minecraft part), but DONT focus more than two sentences

@lsutiger25 I would say something along the lines of having a website before and that you hope IMSA can further help you spark your interests in programming.

Hi guys. Can someone tell me my chances of getting into IMSA for 2019.
My SAT is 640 math, and 620 CR although I will be taking it again January, but idk how much it will rise.
My GPA is 4.0 for all years
My English teacher is helping me revise and “spruce up” my essays.
I’m from a minority town… Elgin, but go to school in the Burlington area,
We don’t have any science or math opportunities at my school, but before I moved to the district I did Robotics, and Math Club. Now, I do Scholastic Bowl (first time), and FFA. Also I’m the stand-in Treasurer (pretty sure I will be Treasurer by the end of the month) at my school in Student Council
I received the Illinois Minority Recognition Award from the Secretary of State, and also received the President’s Award. I’ve been playing piano and viola for a long time, achieving multiple awards from the National Federation of Music and I got into the All-State ILMEA Orchestra. I’ve volunteered as a musician in orphanages, and elderly housing.
I’ve done volunteer work at our library in Elgin, and would volunteer at hospitals but they require you to be 16 and over here.
I recently received an invitation to represent my high school at the National Student Leadership Conference for Medical Science and Health at Northwestern, and also Psychology at Harvard Med.
I’m Indian and am fluent in 3 languages, and currently learning Spanish.

I’ve been moving a lot my entire life, and I’ve only been in Illinois for 1.5 years now. Due to this, I haven’t been able to partake and represent in many state and national competitions. And now, my school doesn’t have any opportunities for specifically Math and Science.

Can someone please tell me how good my chances are?

Oh and I’m a freshman

.

@isolatedmind Hey, I’m a current sophomore at IMSA. From how your school sounds, I think you have a pretty good chance to get accepted. The admissions board looks for people who have done a lot of good things and took advantage of their opportunities, and they usually prioritize people from small towns and from schools without many academic opportunities. Just make sure your essays are awesome, and good luck!

How do I get a math or science award in the next month? Are there any competitions that I can enter and get an award in

@soulspirit463 May be organize a local competition (school level) really quickly and win it
…or even better win a lottery and donate all the money you won to IMSA <:-P

As far as I know, all high level math/science competition for 2016 will not be concluded by March 1…

@soulsplit463 Not having one more award won’t be detrimental to your application. Don’t stress over getting an award before the application deadline. It’s not that big of a deal.

I don’t have a math award either…how bad is that?

@isolatedmind, This should count as an immense science award.
I recently received an invitation to represent my high school at the National Student Leadership Conference for Medical Science and Health at Northwestern, and also Psychology at Harvard Med.

How does your school offer this it seems really cool.

@YoloSwagMaster Idk… but 3 people from past years went to the Medical Program and 1 went to Psychology program, and I think all got recommended by their science teachers. Sometimes the admissions board in Chicago looks out for great GPA in small towns and people that try but live in towns that aren’t really offering invigorating courses. I was surprised too, seeing how my school is literally in the middle of nowhere lol.

Yeah I need a math or science award and the next math meet is 2/2, which is 1 day after the applications are due :frowning: and the only award you can earn there is a perfect score @notarapper I don’t have any science or math awards atm and I know I should have done science fair in middle school but I didn’t and now I’m kind of screwed

@soulsplit463 Like I just said, you don’t need any math or science awards to get accepted.

@notarapper ok, then what do they look at most in order of importance

@soulsplit463 what school do you go to? The new President at IMSA has been trying to incorporate more minorities into the school, from what I’ve heard. I don’t necessarily have any math and science awards either, just academic ones.
