Imsa applicant class of 2019

I have to laugh, I sent my math teacher the evaluation last night and, as of 8:37 this morning, it’s submitted. Now if only my other teachers could do the same //sigh

@red42413 If I was you, I would contact this teacher to check if she/he pushed submit button by accident (late evening, a glass of wine… just kidding). Anyway, if it was an accident, you could resend evaluation request again I suppose… I do not believe it was enough time to write a solid evaluation…

How will you know whether or not your teacher submitted the recommendation?

@isolatedmind It should notify you on your admissions tracker. This weekend is going to be a major study opportunity for me in SAT. Like I am aiming for a 700 Math and 650 Reading and if I don’t get that I will be very disappointed (especially in math). Anyone else taking the January SAT?

I am. I haven’t taken it before, so I hope that won’t count against me if I do badly.

@chicagonerd Didn’t you say you were consistently getting 800s in Reading and Writing, if that’s true than I doubt that you will do badly. I really wish I could do that, but math is more of my strong suit. I’ve been scoring 650s but I was hoping for 700. Also how do you get 800s in writing, like is there any tips or are you just good?

@YoloSwagMaster For the grammar portion of writing, I just go through a checklist in my head for each word. I’ve found that most of the time I can catch errors because they just sound a little off, but the ones I generally don’t catch by just reading it to myself are subject verb agreement. There are a lot of those on the practice tests. For the writing portion, I’ve focused more on understanding the test than anything else.

@YoloSwagMaster @chicagonerd Does IMSA take writing scores? I thought they only took CR and Math

@isolatedmind They take writing scores. They started looking at them last year.

I am completely new to this website so please excuse my abruptness. I would really appreciate it though, if anyone could state my chances of getting into IMSA.

GPA: 5.3 (Weighted) - only received one ‘B’ this year in Honors English I. I also received only one B in my eighth grade year (French II).
Honors classes: Honors Algebra II, Honors Bio, and Honors English I.
Essays: Pretty good
SAT (Haven’t taken it yet) - Hoping to get at least 600 or above in all of the three. Question: Does IMSA look at your SAT scores individually(out of 800) or together(out of 2400)?
Teacher recommendations:
Math - Really strong
Bio - Quite strong
English - Fair (because of my B)
Location: Central Illinois
Extra curriculars: only Scholastic Bowl at the moment. But in junior high, I was in Math Team (our team made it to state), Scholastic Bowl and chess club. My new high school doesn’t have a Math Team though. There was never a STEM club and Science Olympiad in both the schools.

Hey @Programmer42. Welcome to the chat! This is what I think your chances are, I’m not an expert this is just what I think.

GPA: Good, one B is not going to kill you. Don’t worry about it.
Classes: Your fine here, it’s good that your in honors
Essays: Just try your best to make them good
SAT: the average is 615ish reading and 680ish math. Base it off that.
To answer your question, they look at each one individual
Teacher Recs: assuming what you say is correct, you should be fine.
Location: great: not as competitive as Chicago land, which is where I’m at :frowning:
Extracurriculars: not your strong point, try to mention you didn’t have much opportunity.

Overall, you seem like a good applicant. If you don’t mind mentioning, what gender and ethnicity are you. It’s fine if you don’t want to disclose that.

@YoloSwagMaster An Indian male. Alright, but where on the app should I mention that there wasn’t much of an opportunity? Is it the extra-curricular section? Yeah, I’ve heard the competition is pretty high in Chicago land, good luck! This thing is REALLY stressing me out! I haven’t even been doing my homework! I’ve been editing my essays and preparing for the SAT on the 23rd the whole time. I really hope I get in. What about you? Are you stressing out too?

Hi @Programmer42 I didn’t have that many opportunities either, and I mentioned it in my essay. They just want to know if you took advantage of the opportunities that you had, even if there weren’t that many.

Alright @chicagonerd I’ll do just that. Thanks a bunch! How bad do you guys wanna go to IMSA?

@Programmer42. I’m an Indian Male from ChicagoLand. Which is probably the most competitive spot that there can be. I’ve been stressing out over my essays quite a bit because I know it’s going to be a major part of my app. I already took the SAT in October and am happy with the scores I got. The only reason I’m taking it on the 23rd is because my parents will give me an Apple Watch if I do really well and I really want one, otherwise I wouldn’t even take it. I applied last year and went to the 8th grade interview which gave me really helpful tips. I’ve been managing my stress for IMSA, I try to work hard and plan everything so it can be perfect. After that I know I have no control over. I do really want to get in though, I don’t really like my high school. It would be nice to be around people that have same interests as me.

@YoloSwagMaster. I can only imagine how bad the pressure is for I live in Central Illinois(not that much pressure). All I’ve done is Fusion program and a visit to IMSA…I really hope that’s enough for them to see that I am serious. By the way, when do they give us the results?

I am an 8 grader, so have a very little chance to get in this year… something like 1/5… however, really want to get in. I am taking online biology to cover for 9 grade science class. Will be bored next year in my local rural school Biology class, since it is really really less intensive. I only have advanced math here. I know if I get into IMSA I will have more people like me, my local school people are all in sports, not in science…

@YoloSwagMaster Just wondering, what score will bring you an Apple Watch?

@Programmer42 The pressure is quite high where I live. Not to mention, my INDIAN parents are already acting like I am going. I don’t even have a chance not to get in.

@javascript I was just like you in 8th grade. This year biology is a breeze. I think my bio rec is going to be really good.

I have to get a 2100 composite to get an apple watch

@YoloSwagMaster I am thinking to switch to a different class instead of biology next year if I will have to stay in my rural school, hate to be bored… I wish I took chemistry or physics online instead of Biology. Still hope to get into IMSA this year…
