Imus blast away

“Rather than wasting his time with Sharpton, he should have been busy setting up a fat scholarship fund for female athletes at Rutgers, and making sure the entire bball team was on a full athletic scholarship, by meeting the financial need of those players that are not fully-funded. Simply requesting an apology meeting with them won’t cut it.”

I was thinking more on the order of the “Don Imus Sports Arena and Training Complex”.

I’m with LakeWashington on this. It’s one thing to go after a publicity hound movie star or politician, another to go after young kids - 5 of the team are freshman.
they have a great woman coaching them.

All this talk about “forgiving” Imus because he’s made a BIG apololgy - well, that’s all fine and dandy, but at what point do you just accept the fact that a person is a jerk and should be fired or ostracized or just cut out of your life???

You could forgive him, accept his apology, believe that it is sincere, and still not trust him on the publicly regulated airwaves.

Imus is well known for making racist comments, off air as well as on. And as far as letting the marketplace decide, his ratings have been abysmal for many years. I’m sure very few actually heard the comments live.

His “cancer ranch” is indeed a joke, funded by listener donations. He takes very few kids in (part of their therapy involves serving as “hired hands”), and lives there himself with his wife & son. Not exactly “St. Judes”. There was a scandal a few years ago when it was discovered that his wife’s published cook book had all its recipes stolen from one of the on site chefs.

Oh yeah, and what’s the deal that his suspension doesn’t start until NEXT Monday? Slightly hypocritical IMO (or may be giving them time to figure out what to do with him).

Fundraiser. Money maker.

Good column…

I certainly don’t agree with what Imus said. I think it was just plain ignorant, but I also have to wonder why it is the the two loudest critics…the “men of the cloth” Al and Jesse always get free passes. Sometimes I think they speak just so they can get the camera time.
What I also don’t understand is that in this country saying you are sorry means nothing and forgiveness is unthinkable, especially with the above “men of the cloth” who are supposed to be preaching it.

Exactly when did they “get a free pass”? As I remember, they took HUGE plasterings (even when their comments were made in private).

like i said in the other post. I hope many of you actually saw what imus said, not just read an article saying he made a racist comment. It wasn’t exactly racist…he just said they looked like ugly hookers basically. You should watch it on YouTube–it wasn’t as bad as most people made it out to be.

While I definately think the joke was in poor taste (why would you make fun of a bunch of girls who just lost in a championship game?), I don’t think it should garner as much attention as it has.

What I find revolting was Howard Fineman explaining that Imus is really just behind the times, and how unfortunate it is that people can’t just laugh off those racist misogynistic comments anymore, they have to get all angry about it.

mini

I don’t see an Al Sharpton center in upstate New York where Tawana Brawley is from or an Al Sharpton Jewish center in Harlem after he called for the ouster of a Jewish store owner.

Anyone remember Freddie’s Fashion Mart ? Sharpton decided that Harlem should be segregated and decided that the Jewish owned store should close even though its been there for decades. At one of the many rallies meant to scare the Jewish owner away, Sharpton charged that ?there is a systemic and methodical strategy to eliminate our people from doing business off 125th Street. I want to make it clear . . . that we will not stand by and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business.? Sharpton?s colleague, Morris Powell, said of the Jewish owner ? Sharpton?s ?white interloper? ? ?We?re going to see that this cracker suffers. Reverend Sharpton is on it.? Three months later, one of the protesters, Roland Smith, stormed Freddy?s with a pistol, screaming, ?It?s on now: All blacks out!? In addition to shooting, he burned the place down. Eight people died. Sharpton first lied about being present. When confronted with a video tape showing his presence, he said: “What’s wrong with denouncing white interlopers?”

My point is that we probably have the most racially tolerant country in the world. Sure there is racism, sure there are those that will never think that diversity is a good thing, but I also think that Al and Jesse do more harm for race relations than good. They have their agenda and they are sticking to it

jags - This is interesting because I have watched the youtube (and posted a link at this thread) and I saw something completely different than you apparently. I saw a group of old codgers, one wearing a ridiculous cowboy hat INDOORS, sitting around smugly making fun of the appearance of a group of young women USING RACIALLY charged language to do so. Not only that, they drew a comparison (via the Spike Lee movie reference) and directly stated the girls from Tennessee, most of whom were white or black with straightened hair, “were cute”, while the girls from Rutgers, who didn’t have the ‘white’ styled hair, were ‘rough’ and looked like prostitutes. This is racism and Mr. Imus needs to get a clue.

You could use porta-johns as air fresheners when Al Sharpton is nearby. Imus’ judgement in going on Sharpton’s show was as bad as the remark about the Rutgers women.

If someone wants to clean up the airways, they might start by eliminating broadcasts of all songs with more than one bleeped word. Imus is far down the list of offenders.

I’ll ask again where is the questioning of Russell Simmons?

Much as I think Imus is a delirious old goat whose time was past years and years ago, there’s much truth in what you say, dadx. Some of our popular mainstream rappers could use a few sensitivity sessions to brush up on how to respect their women in their musical masterpieces, I dare say.

xpost, hazmat.

As you note, so exquisitely well, Al Sharpton didn’t get a free pass.

He most certainly did. He should have been jailed, or at the very least, drummed into obscurity after his past actions. He and Imus deserve one another. I’d lke to see them in a jail cell together.

dadx, truer words were never spoken.

Sure, why not. That in addition to the scholarship fund, as long as he isn’t given the perk of splashing his sorry name all over the building.
