"In approximately 100 words..." ?

A short response prompt for one of my applications says “In approximately 100 words…” Is 103 words okay? Or do you think the “approximately” is code for “don’t go over 100 words”?

You’re fine.

is 126 pushing it??

No; however, talk to the school.

to me that’s too many. They want you to concisely answer something. Maybe you do it in 90, maybe 110, but I think a 25% overrun is starting to be too much.

I think 126 words is pushing it as it is 26% over the limit. More is not better when point is to be both meaningful and concise.

You usually wanna be in the 90%-110% range.
