How often are students allowed to study abroad in most colleges? I plan to do it as much as I can.

im thinking a calender year or however much you can afford but supposely studying abroad alot will postpone your graduation date

There is a program at Temple where you study two years at the Temple campus and two years abroad. The one I heard about is a Japanese program, but I would guess that others exist. You might look at Temple’s site and get some ideas of what else is offered.

Most Colleges -0-

Good colleges, at least a semester and it shouldn’t delay your graduation - as long as you plan accordingly…

wait wait wait. Studying abroad delays graduation??? Then why would I have to take classes abroad? I might as well not go to college for the same time I would be delayed, then just spend my time in that country for fun so I can REALLY understand local culture and such. That would be the better thing to do. I thought abroad programs include classes so that you actually get to graduate the same time??

Also, I’m going to look up that Temple program, but if you know other programs like that, please share. thanks

“I plan to do it as much as I can.” Then why bother with college…?

Because employers want people with a degree. Trust me, if the days of marco polo, where I could just travel and sell my wares existed, and I was able to walk around places with no money while staying at monasteries for free, I would do it in a heart beat.

The comment about taking longer to graduate is not a universal truth. However, there are a number of study abroad programs that are total boondoggles. Like most things, it’s a buyer beware situation. Make sure that whatever study abroad program you do is going to give you credit toward your degree. There are many study abroad programs and your university may not require you to do its study abroad, but you have to make sure the credits will apply.

Something else you might look up is the year at sea programs. I know that UVa has one, but you just need to do a Google search. The programs are very pricey, but I do think that financial aid is available if you are eligible. They look very interesting to me.
