in my essay, I want to admit that...

I hate working in groups in school. overall, I think my essay idea is pretty creative, but if I want to follow through with it, I might have to admit this. would the colleges frown upon my disliking for working with others? Teachers know that it’s because the other kids in my class aren’t responsible and I don’t like communicating with disinterested people… but I’m not sure if that would be made clear in my application. Should I risk it and go ahead? I mean… independence isn’t necessarily a bad thing either, is it?

Independence isn’t a bad thing, but you’ll need to work in groups sometimes. You’ll need both abilities later in life.

I know, I know… I’m not saying that I CAN’T work with others… it’s just not my favorite thing to do.

Your topic is fine. But you need to learn how to spin it. I may not work well in groups, BUT I work amazingly well by myself. It cannot come off as ‘I hate other people’, because colleges don’t want that kid.

in my essay, I want to admit that…

I killed a man. Would colleges frown upon this?

I think this is tricky— spin will be important. You don’t want to seem like a complainer, one who thinks he/she is superior to peers, one who doesn’t collaborate or delegate or lead well. Remember college is a great filter and you are likely to be working with people more similar to you ( in terms of academic interest) than your high school experience allowed, so this problem should fade in college. Beware of how your views reflect back on you. Hope this makes sense.

Hm. Well, I do have several leadership positions and recs to back that I at least do lead… (I dont know how the teachers will put this) and work to keep a group together. Thanks for the advice!

i actually do think it is a bad idea. colleges emphasize their study groups, and lecture sections so much because they want to offer that group experience to their students. maybe start off saying that you disliked working with groups but note how you’ve matured and dealt with it (as i’m sure you have)
