In San Diego now...Little Italy restaurants

Any recommendations? Great city…we just love it!

I have no specific recommendations but welcome to our city and our weather. Little Italy has great restaurants but I’m not a foodie and don’t get out much… Great place for sunset walk is the area called Sunset Cliffs.

If you’ll be in San Diego a few days, try Hash House a Go Go for breakfast or brunch. My daughter used to work there and misses it.

Ok…sounds good. I’ll try to go Sunday.

Indigo Grill; it’s not Italian, but it’s in Little Italy and it’s good.

For brunch, I’d recommend Brockton VIlla at the Cove in La Jolla

Fig Tree Eatery, there are 3 of them, good for breakfast/brunch/lunch. I have been to one in Hilllcrest. That area has many decent restaurants.

Go to the farmer’s market tomorrow morning right in Little Italy - tons of food booths and free samples from the produce vendors.

We’ve been to and enjoyed Juniper & Ivy and The Crack Shack, both run by Richard Blais of Top Chef fame. Burger Lounge has great burgers (we’ve been to the one in La Jolla). Also have enjoyed Trattoria Fantastica.

Do you have to stay in Little Italy or are you looking for recommendations in other neighborhoods? If so, what kind of restaurants are you interested in and what price range? It’s the end of Restaurant Week so there are lots of special interesting menus at a number of places.

Don’t forget to review your thread from April for ideas: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1877736-anybody-from-the-san-diego-area-p1.html

Not in Little Italy but relatively close, I highly recommend Coasterra on Shelter Island, which has an unbeatable view. Extraordinary Desserts on 5th definitely lives up to its name. Searsucker, also on 5th, is good, and Rustic Root (just down the street) has a fantastic rooftop bar. Liberty Public Market, anchored by Stone Brewery but with other options, is also really cool. There are so many great places in San Diego - enjoy!!

Filippi’s in Little Italy since they do have parking!

Just a quick note that Coasterra is on Harbor Island rather than Shelter Island. Took me a couple of weeks after moving here to get them straight!

My favorite Italian restaurant in San Diego is not in Little Italy. It’s Lorna’s Kitchen which is at the corner of Governor and Genesee, just south of La Jolla. It’s a moderately-priced family place. Order the Tagilatele Bolonese.

I liked Lorna’s too in “University City” but if you’re transportation is limited, it would be a hard find.

Lots of good suggestions. If you get to La Jolla have a drink at Eddie V’s or George’s. Beautiful views from both places. You picked the perfect time to visit. Still a little warm today, but cooling down tomorrow.

I third Lorna’s from a cc suggestion years ago. Liberty station/Stone’s is neat. I’m not a beer drinker (husband is) but I have always had great food and service at every Karl Strauss.

Benecotto or Monello for great Italian food! They are sister restaurants and always highly rated…next door to each other on the corner of India and W. Fir. Right in the heart of Little Italy, great place to walk around after. Try iDessert just a couple blocks down on India…interesting concept. Also love Buon Appetito on India St.
Also Richard Blaise has a great restaurant on Kettner called Juniper and Ivy. Brian Malarkey has a restaurant right next door called Herb and Wood - both are excellent if not a bit more upscale. More casually, Blaise has a really cute fried chicken place right next door to his Juniper and Ivy called Crack Shack.
One more thing- it’s Restaurant Week right now so google that and see who’s participating in Little Italy, or elsewhere for that matter.
Oops @Marilyn just saw you already recommended J&I

A quick hint about George’s at the Cove (great food, great view). The bottom level is “fine dining” and is not inexpensive. The top level is outdoor, more casual dining and pricing with a stunning view. The mid-level is the bar area with a terrace, same pricing as the top level.

Also, Jakes in Del Mar (literally on the beach) is great anytime! And you simply have to go to Balboa Park.

(I’m personally not a big fan of Lorna’s; much better food and views elsewhere, but maybe I need to try the Tagilatele Bolonese.)

I was driving through Little Italy the other day going to the Architectural Salvage place and had never seen the ‘crack shack’ and could not figure out who all those people were standing in line  Now I know.

I am the poster child for someone who has lived in town for over 20 years and never gets out and about like our visitors do!

Thinking of La Jolla, we went to Bistro du Marche on Tuesday for Restaurant Week and had a lovely meal with excellent service. Then we went to Duke’s La Jolla on Thursday for a very nice meal with very good service and a lovely view.

If you like French food and don’t want to go too far afield, there’s a cute little place in Mission Hills called Cafe Blue that we enjoyed last year on our anniversary. In Liberty Station, Solare is a interesting Italian restaurant with some twists on traditional food. We liked Buon Appetito the first time we went a few years ago but were disappointed on a return visit last year.

In Balboa Park, try The Prado for lunch, drinks, or dinner. Or try the more casual Panama 66 and enjoy a light meal overlooking the sculpture garden.

This weekend is B of A museums on us. First full weekend of each month. Free admission to the Art museum and the photography museum at Balboa Park; also Scripps aquarium with B of A OR Merrill Lynch cards. Nice before or after lunch
