In-School Rankings

If a BS asks the school that you attended in 7th and 8th grade, which year do they ask the rank for, 7th or 8th?

Side note: I think they should use 7th grade because when you apply for BS, you still haven’t finished 8th grade.

They ask for class rank on HS application? I didn’t think many MS have class rankings.

No, they will contact your school either way for the rank from your guidance counselor or your principal

bump

@sword140 you asked a question and then argued with the one respondent. Most boarding schools do not care about rankings. In our experience it was not requested. Class rank is a meaningless metric. They want to the applicants courses, grades, recommendations , extracurriculars and SSATs.

None of the schools my D applied to asked for class rank in an interview or on an application. I know for sure they never called her school either. Her school told us they never had a single call from BS. Are you worried about your rank or are you proud of it? If you are a top student, most likely your Math/English teacher will write about it in their recommendations. Schools look at grades from all of middle school including 6th and 8th. Your application should be more than numbers and stats…

@Center Where did you see that I had “argued” with @MA2012 ? Also, they do how do you know if Boarding Schools don’t care about in-school ranking?

So here’s the deal, which basically reinforces what was said above:

• BS’s don’t ask for class rank on the application
• IME, most middle schools don’t rank anyway.
• My MS has never received a phone call/email from a BS asking about class rank.
• From my experience in dealing with HS ranks, they are always cumulative.
• If a MS, or any school, ranks, they usually only do it ant end-of-year, or at end-of semester. Few schools will have completed Fall semester by the time most BS’s applications are due, so for those few that might rank, they won’t have current year factored in yet.
• If you have found the one BS that actually calls and ask about rank, it’s not you can do anything about it.

Good luck.

The Transcript Form for Gateway to Prep Schools includes a place for the school to report rank: https://www.gatewaytoprepschools.com/documents/transcript-report.pdf

Exeter’s School Report form is similar to the Gateway form and also asks for rank:
http://www.exeter.edu/documents/Common_School_Report.pdf

Do any middle schools actually rank? I sure hope not.

I guess we never put a rank on Gateway or Exeter Ap bc her middle school didn’t rank. Just Honors…

I believe that the ranking information on the transcript report is more applicable for those students who are applying as 10th graders and beyond or as repeat 9th graders (i.e. already have some HS background).
