In state tuition documentation needed for parent state employee?

War Eagle! Looking for some guidance hoping somebody has navigated this before. We live in Georgia, my wife will work for a public school in Alabama (state employee). What documents / proof is needed to get my child’s resident status changed to in-state? The form mentions a AL drivers license, but is that really required?

Are you saying that your family resides in Georgia, but because your wife is a state employee in Alabama, you want your child to have Alabama residency for instate college status?

I don’t know the “rules” in Alabama, but where I am, residency is never based on where some parent works. It’s based on where the family primary residence is.

Perhaps Alabama has different rules…but I would be checking that first.

My DH worked in a neighboring state. Our kids never had instate residency status in that state…because that wasn’t their state of residence.

Correct, it is #3 on the bulletin here

just wondering if anyone else has gone this route before and what documentation they need.
Thanks for your perspective

Your link isn’t a link. Can you fix that!

Here’s Auburn’s link with all the required documentation: https://www.auburn.edu/administration/registrar/residency/documents/Petition%20for%20Classificatio%201_2_24.pdf

If it’s on the list, assume it’s required.

It says

“ copy of your (if the employee) or parents current AL drivers license”

Is anyone else reading this that the parent or employee needs to have a AL drivers license?

I would get that clarified!

The document list is long, including:
10. Copy of both parent’s Alabama Driver license. You HAVE TO MOVE your driver’s license within 30 days of moving. If you miss the 30 days, your 12 months begins the date you moved the driver’s license to AL. If current AL license isn’t the earliest, provide evidence of earliest AL license. A copy of your driver history can be obtained by visiting the Alabama DMV.
11. Copy of your parent’s Alabama vehicle registration. You HAVE TO MOVE your vehicle registration within 30 days of moving. If you miss the 30 days, your 12 months begins the date you moved the registration.

So doesn’t this sound like the parent needs to do these things? If the parent is not a resident of AL, is this possible to do?

Yes it sounds like the parents need to have done these things but the OP should clarify with Auburn.

OP - generally speaking it’s very difficult to get instate tuition if you the parents haven’t been living in the state, and your child hasn’t graduated from HS there.

It’s odd, to me, that any public school employee in Alabama is necessarily a state employee. In my state, most public school employees are hired by/paid by the district they work for.

I also find it odd that Category G has a requirement of an AL driver’s license, even though the description of Category G doesn’t require “established primary domicile” the same way that Category B does.

I almost feel like this is something the HR person your wife interacts with most would be able to answer, since their region of the state is the one most likely to be affected by “State agency employee who isn’t moving into the state, but would like the Resident tuition rate for a State college”.

In Georgia, all public school employees are state employees - some of them don’t realize it, they think they are county employees because the county collects the school tax on behalf of the schools in their county, but it’s only the processing of the funds that they handle.

Also, it wasn’t until my son’s second year of grad school working as a research assistant with an apartment in his name and an Alabama drivers license for a year that he was considered in state. They want to know you/your parents are paying Alabama taxes.
