In-Touch Newsletter

S got another “In-Touch” newsletter today, for accepted students, Spring Edition. I’m sure those of you that didn’t get the last edition will be getting this one.

Anyone else have acceptance letters from BOTH Carolina AND Clemson?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=296978</a></p>

I’m getting kinda nervous because I’m not getting anything from South Carolina, and I was accepted in December. Did you already accept the acceptance?

Oh…and I got accepted by both Clemson and South Carolina, but I’m like 95% sure I’m going to USC

jingle: I wonder if those receiving newsletters have already sent in the housing form and deposit.

No, we got ours yesterday and have not sent in the housing deposit.

One question we have: they have one-day orientation listed as occuring in May and June. Our schools arent out until June 15 in Virginia. Does this mean by the time we make it down to USC for an orientation that all the good classes will have been taken?

Jingle1 (or anyone else) why are you choosing SC over Clemson, is it a major that you are interested in, or the offer that they have made?

Also does anyone know if there are accepted student days for students who are not receiving scholarships?

namtrag
it may make a difference as to class availability when you attend the orientation
it may be worth missing a day of school to accomodate an earlier date.

namtrag - we were in the same boat last year.School was out around June 15 and then we waited another 2 weeks to go down. While many sections of classes were closed, my daughter was able to get a pretty good schedule. The only problem was her language class ( Italian ) which was completely full in all sections. She may have been able to get a waiver from the prof but it worked out in the long run anyway. She ended up meeting with the head of the Italian Dept for an evaluation and signed up for the higher level class offered this semester anyway. ( Unfortunately they don’t offer placement tests in some of the less mainstream languages).
I think you have to be pretty flexible with your course selection , but it is doable. If I had it to to do over I would probably have arranged for her to go down earlier.

I think we will go earlier. It’s not like there is a reason to get perfect attendance at that point!

agreed…after the AP’s it seems like they didnt do anything anyway.
Don’t forget…you pick an Orientation date based on the Honors College (they are the primary advisor) and they coordinate with the dept of the major.

We did not get newsletter (either fall or spring). We sent in housing deposit last week.

Ok…but I need to get this straighted out…(d doesn’t graduate until June 22nd).

There are two open house days scheduled for the spring? (we’ve been trying to keep up with everything (on all her colleges) on the web…but between school, working, etc., etc). So, she comes down on one of those days and actually registers for her classes? (Note: 1st child didn’t have to register for his classes {different university} because the engineering department did it for him…so I am new at this.

If so, when are the dates? (again, I am at work and can’t surf…I only come to this site…)

I am planning to major in bioengineering, and Clemson is nationally recognized in that department (while USC is not), plus it has an amazing summer program for engineers. USC, however, seems more what I am looking for in a college. Clemson is in the middle of nowhere, with no malls or even very many restaurants nearby. I was really suprised princeton review rated Clemson so high on many things, including #4 for happiest students and #13 for best quality of life (http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/profiles/rankings.asp?listing=1022889&ltid=1&intbucketid=), which persuaded me to apply, but SO many people I have talked to seem to have negative things to say about it. I guess it just depends what you want…if you want a rural environment with a university that practically is the town, Clemson is probably the way to go.

momwithquestions
the open house dates are NOT the Orientation dates.
Orientation dates are in May and June.thats when the kids test in Math and Foreign Language and get advised and registered.
Open House dates are to help undecided students decide that USC is where they would like to attend.
Any student getting a scholarship will be invited to Scholars Day in addition to
Open House.
The Admissions Office will be glad to clear upo any questions you have, apparently, from what Ms Scrivens posted in her Admissions blog.

this thread is a very interesting mixture of topics, somehow, Clemson vs USC got mixed into a thread about the In Touch newsletter!

Cathy, thanks for reminding me that the HC does it a little differently. My S really doesn’t know what to major in yet. He wants to do a combination of at least 3 things: math, computer science, and French. Also wants to learn Arabic

Namtrag
He may be the perfect candidate for that special Bachelor’s Degree the Honors college offers…the one the student creates themselves.Dont worry,he’ll get a great Honors advisor who will be able to help him figure it all out!

Yes, that’s what excited us so much, the opportunity to design your own degree. Dr. Baird told us that you get a committee that helps you design it, and keeps you on track.

Plus getting to honorize your AP credits will help a lot

Cathymee:
Thanks for the info. After reading it, I called the admissions office to clarify. So…I will do our trip in the end of May or beginning of June. Glad you told me before I purchased airline tickets.

ypur welcome
anything else I can help with, ask away!
