I remember one of the questions from Columbia’s Writing Supplement was what our favorite book was and why (not exact but close). Would it be weird if I wrote that I enjoyed “American Psycho” by Bret Easton Ellis the best? For those of you who don’t know, American Psycho is one of the most controversial books of all time because of its crazy sex and violence, but it was really interesting to me because of its moral and the psychological workings of the narrator. Help?

It would not be weird.

American Psycho is NOT one of the most controversial books of all time.

2nd the above.

That’s what I heard from reviews… but thanks a lot for your input!

Third that. It’s a cool book, possibly rising to “modern classic” level and is more “inappropriate content” than “controversial”. Colleges see you as an adult, and the sexual/violent content is not taboo.

I think “controversy” could actually be a favorable element…I imagine that there will be 100s of “Great Gatsby”s that something a bit more exhilarating and unexpected will be a welcomed change for the reader
