Many programs have supplemental applications to the theatre department and require a resume with that.

My question is…should the resume be included with the application or the Counselor Report so that the admissions committee also sees it?

I will be interested in what others say about this. My D didn’t do this. She simply submitted the resume where it was asked for in the materials and brought it to the in person auditions. Perhaps others did it differently.

MamaBear - the one thing D was keen on adhering to last year was ‘follow the instructions to a T’ (if they want only 2 recommendations, don’t send 3 etc.; if they wanted a copy of her artistic resume, she sent that. Never more, unless it specifically said you could send any additional materials at your discretion). Some school admissions staff actually said during their info sessions that they don’t like it when applicants “ignore” their guidelines, i.e. sometimes more is frowned upon.

My D typically sent in her resumes, when the supplemental instructions told her to do so (most schools), and she would also bring some copies to her auditions (like NMR’s D). The Counselor Report would be sent separately and directly by the school. If I remember correctly the only two schools that requested to be sent only “one supplemental package” she applied to were CMU, and UMich. For those schools she combined everything in one envelope. The instructions could be different this year though. You may want to check.

We did exactly what MTgrlsmom did. The only addition is we also asked the high school to add a copy of my D’s resume to the counselor report/high school transcript package they were sending out to each school just to be on the safe side.

Follow the directions “to a T.” We have a friend who works in admissions at a major university and she stressed that, when it comes to submitting admissions materials, you MUST do it just as it is stated. Extra materials will be ignored, and the fact that you did not follow instructions may be held against you.

That being said, sometimes the regular college apps permit you to send a supplemental resume. This is probably NOT the same as your performance resume. It might include all activities, and the performance stuff might be summarized within these activities. I know that my S ended up with 2 resumes (and activities resume and a performance resume) and submitted the one appropriate to the application instructions. The performance resume went with him to all the auditions.

My daughter had 2 resumes. One was for the “academic” side of the admissions process and listed all her academic honors, EC’s, community service, work experience, summer college/pre-college programs. We included this with all applications since the Common App did not have enough room to list everything. She also had a performing arts resume limited to artistic training, performing experience and performing related work. The artistic resume was submitted at each audition and also included with the application for those schools that specifically requested it as part of the application materials.
