Incoming Cate Student

Hi. I’m an incoming 9th grader to the Cate school in Fall 2025. I realized I won’t be able to attend the revisit day, so I was wondering if a current or former Cate student could answer some of my questions!

  1. Are ALL FRESHMEN students required to take Physics? Is this something you can switch if you find the curriculum not challenging enough, or want to take something else?

  2. How easy is it to leave campus? Unlike other schools Cate is in a more remote area, so how easy is it to leave campus to go to town? For example If I need to go to Santa Barbara once or twice a week for activities?

  3. How is boarding life at Cate? How are dorms, and the leaving area like?

  4. Music, does Cate offer a strong music program? Or would that likely be something I would need to reach out to people in cities?

5.Outdoors, how much do you spend outdoors, like going to parks, hiking, camping, etc.? Once a month? Three times a year?

  1. Buildling off the question 1, would comp sci electives be available to students? Like robotics, or just general CS.

  2. How many classes and how long are classes per day? Do you get many free blocks and time for homework and extracurriculrs? Or is it like your typical 8am-3pm schedule.

  3. Around what time do people wake up to start classes? Is there a set time where all classes start? Or does it vary on the schedule for the day?

  4. When I visited Cate, in December it was very hot, like 80 degrees. Is this normal, is weather this hot all year?

  5. How are the people there? How is community, is it competitive, relaxed?

  6. What classes use the Harkensss table, or discussion based classes, and what classes use typically classroom style?

  7. What is the typical Homework load for freshmen? Are you constantly stress to get good grades, or is it chill?

  8. Is Cate, Thacher rivalry intense? Or do they even have rivalry?

  9. What sort of club opportunities does Cate offer?

Thanks!

While someone may answer here, reach out to the Cate AO and ask to speak with a few students with your interests (music, anything else) since you can’t attend a revisit day. They usually oblige!
