Going to GW next year, I was wondering if any current students (or people that know current students) could give suggestions on certain things.
Such as, for example, a digital e- reader (nook, kindle, iPad, etc.) for textbooks (and if so, which one), an iPad/macbook/etc. for class notes (and if so, for which one), etc.

Obviously if any other incoming freshman have questions, feel free to post on this thread!

Not sure about the digital e-reader thing. But keep in mind that not all textbooks have ebooks.
For taking notes, practically EVERYONE has a macbook here. Frankly, I think it’s a conformity thing. Yes it looks nice and all, but if you’re just going to take notes and do general work with it (email, facebook, movies, etc), then there really is little to no difference between a mac and pc. Unless you’re majoring in art, design, or w/e’s related to them, then a pc is a better and cheaper choice. That’s just my opinion. I’m sticking with my pc ;)

thanks! do most people take notes on their computers? i’ll be attending the business school if that makes a difference.

for the business school get a pc - none of the statistical software works on a mac

you just killed my soul a little bit…

collegecutie2016: If you have a Mac already, there may be other options for you. But if you do not have a laptop yet, go for the PC for business!

I use Linux at home (and Mac is pretty much a ripoff of Linux/UNIX) and you can install a program called “WINE” (which stands for WINE Is Not an Emulator xD) to run Windows programs on. It is a pain in the neck, there is some flaws and it doesn’t work for all applications but if you refuse to use anything but Linux (or in your case Mac), then give it a try!

Good luck!

Yeah most business kids take notes on their laptop. And then of course they go on facebook etc when the lecture gets boring. I’m a traditional business student cuz I take notes by hand cuz my laptop’s a dinosaur
Hahaha if what GWAlum07 said is true then that sucks for a lot of people.

plenty of people have macs and just install parallels but it never works properly with excel adds ins, matlab, spss, etc.

on our stat final last semester tons of people had problems with their computers. as far as notes goes most professors post the powerpoints so you can just take notes directly on there or take notes by hand. all about how you learn best. a mac won’t inhibit you but it may make your life more difficult in certain courses. i’ve always said pcs are meant to get real work done and macs are meant to go on facebook and listen to music =P

I take all my notes in notebooks because I write faster than type and it keeps me from being distracted. I find that still a large amount, maybe even half of all students still use notebooks.
