Incorrect GPA sent to Colleges

Hi,

The school did not publish grades to the students and sent the grades - mid year report to colleges. We discovered through naviance that it was less by 0.1 point. It does not seem much but it makes the difference between the GPA’s of all the different kids from the school applying to the same college- 1 A converted to A-. Something like from top 5 kids to top 15. School does not rank.

Do not know how to handle this. Assuming that the school will send the revised grade, will it not look awkward? Kid is really upset- He really worked hard to get those A’s.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Ask your high school guidance counselor to resend it to the college where you think it will matter (you seem to have one school in mind). That small difference won’t tip the scales at your safety and match schools, so sending it to a reach or two isn’t too much to ask from your GC. It was, after all, the school’s mistake.

Keep in mind that colleges often recalculate GPAs based on their own preferences. This smooths things out so that high schools who give a 10% GPA boost for honors and AP classes aren’t getting an advantage over a school that only weighs them 5% or less. Also, some high schools include gym and band in the GPA, some don’t. Many colleges equalize in order to make an accurate comparison. You can’t assume they do, though, so it is still a good idea to have the correct score sent ASAP.
