I have reason to believe that College Board gave me someone else’s score.

I received a 7 on the essay. Yes, that is a breakdown of 3 and 4 between the two independent scorers. I consider myself a competent writer. My friend, who is a good writer, but less adept at the English language, scored a 10 on his worst day.
As further evidence, I analyzed what characteristics justified a 3 or 4; needless to say, these did not match my writing capability nor my output.

If this wasn’t enough, each of my sections was lower than it should have been. I have consistently scored in the 2250+ range on official practice exams. I have also mastered the writing section, regularly getting between 0 and 2 wrong. I got 8 wrong on the writing section.

Further, my math and critical reading sections were also abnormally low. Keep in mind, I have thoroughly checked these answers against those of other CC members. This process indicated that I had only 1-3 wrong in each section.

In summary, none of this adds up. If only my multiple choice were wrong, this would be bizarre, but not completely impossible. The 7 essay convinces me that this was a flaw on the part of College Board. I have pressed them to act, and quickly, as I am applying Early Action to my choice school. I will keep you updated.

Any comments, insights, or uplifting words?
Also, have any of you suffered something similar?
From my understanding, there is not much precedent for this – I find that concerning.

How many times have you taken this before? The pressure of the SAT does crazy things, maybe you messed up the scantron? Your best bet is probably to ask for a rescore.

You probably had a poor testing day (maybe made several silly mistakes). Unfortunately the SAT essay doesn’t test a whole lot about how good a writer you are, it merely tests how well you can put a somewhat coherent essay in 25 minutes. That’s just my opinion though.

I think you can ask for a re-grading (you’d have to pay a bit though), but only if you are very confident your test was scored incorrectly…

@rspence - Thanks for your insight. I just find that very hard to believe. I wrote clearly. I developed my thesis. I demonstrated a concrete understanding of the English language. I embedded an ample number of impressive words without sounding wordy. My examples were solid. My conclusion restated my point with a little nuance.

Additionally, a low scoring essay doesn’t account for my absurdly low multiple choice scores.

I would like to reiterate that I checked my answers on CC, where I found only 1 wrong on math (CB gave me 3 wrong.) For the writing section, I got 3 wrong AT THE MOST. College board gave me 8 wrong. For CR, I checked against everyone on CC, finding no more than 3 wrong (CB gave me about 8 wrong.) This simply does not add up.

I also don’t think mis-bubbling would account for this phenomenon, seeing as this problem is pervasive among all three sections.

Also, if the problem was restricted to bubbling, I might acknowledge that it was just a scoring error (either on my part or on that of CB). HOWEVER, the 7 essay convinces me that the test belongs to someone else.

You have to call the College Board and literally tell them that you are not hanging up until they do what you asked.

Except I tried that, and it didn’t work. They won’t give me my score or tell me why it’s being rescored, because apparently the people rescoring it “don’t have telephones.” That is what they told me.

I honestly think you just made silly mistakes. But you should have it rescored. It’s highly unlikely they mixed you up. The system is so efficient. I would rescore it that’s the only possibility of a score change.

Originally i thot this two, as I checked my CR answers online and only got 1 wrong…ended up w/ a 760, and 1 wrong on math got a 770. I really just think this curve sucked. Sorry :(

I have pretty much the same issue. I missed one math question, which I guess could just be chalked up to a stupid mistake :’(. But then I’ve been scoring 750+ on official reading practice tests, and 770+ on writing, and somehow got 690 and 700, respectively (9 essay). I doubt that it is likely that they messed up, but go ahead and try calling them and having it rescored. I’m a bit hopeful myself. Keep us updated!

Or the other possibility is that the general consensus here on CC was wrong too…for example, my friend scored an 800 reading, even though she realized after the test she missed the polymath question. The curve can’t give an 800 for -1 for one person, and 760 for another.

Well I missed one on CR and got 800, so maybe -2 is 760? And if I had just got 10 on the essay, I would have had an 800…

Can I confirm that everyone who got an abnormally low score on the essay had the “can all people benefit from the actions of high achievers?” prompt?

Seriously, we all need to make a petition to get the College Board to regrade our essays. Must have been some disgruntled grader that decided, “you know what, idk anymore.”

I had the same problem, I felt my essay deserved a 7 and I knew what I wrote but I got a 9 and as to why that’s possible. I had the same feeling that this test is not mine when I saw my math score, I felt there is no way in possible that it’s what I got.

wait is this international test? same here. I swear I got only 1 wrong for math and I got a 710…
Wait for your score report? then u can validate your answers?

I posted this in another thread.
These are my score discrepancies.
You guys might find it interesting.
Please post your own if you were able to calculate your rough number of errors from CC.

Math: CB said 3 wrong. Against CC answers, I calculated only 1 wrong.

However, the problem was more potent for CR and Writing.

Writing:

COLLEGE BOARD GAVE ME: 690.
8 wrong / SCORE 7 essay (this essay score is preposterous)

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN: 800.
Against CC answers, I calculated only 1-2 wrong and I expected a 10 essay.

WHAT I USUALLY GET: 800
Between 0-2 wrong.

SCORE DISCREPANCY: ~100
October Expected, CC answers: 800-690=110

- Usual: 800-690=110

Critical reading:

COLLEGE BOARD GAVE ME: 690.
8 MC wrong

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN: 800.
Against CC answers, I calculated between 1-3 wrong.
