Increase in Tuition across the Board

One thing to those that are accepted: DO NOT BE SHY. Even if you are considering a college that is not a "listed" peer institution, Carnegie Mellon may match that college's offer or give you money if you tell them your situation. Do not be afraid to ask or call them.

The worst CMU can do is say no. :)

This might be a stupid question in that I should just call and ask them directly, but here goes.

Would CMU probably consider the honors program at a state school (University of Florida) a peer? I ask because half the reason state schools have honors programs is to attract those kids who they know are applying to top tier institutions. So they might be considered equals? But then, to ask CMU to match my FREE ride to UF would be a little....insane.

I know a kid who used Gemstone honors at UMD to get more money so give it a try.

I have an interesting question:

CMU is about 46,000 all told. They have offered me a certain grant sum, which is exactly the same as that another school has offered me, if not a bit more. The issue, however, is that the second school only has a cost of 30,000. Therefore, there is still a rather large difference in the costs between the two schools. The second school is very close, if not at 100% of my need, considering my EFC. CMU is not at 100%.

Is it therefore appropriate for me to ask them for a larger sum? Will they deny me? The second school is already "matched". but the net amount that would need to become loans is not.

Thanks

Wow that is a GREAT question. I would definitely call the office about that since technically they did "match" you but overall cost is not the same. The second school must have a tuition of around 20k or so?

I would call the office in this case since I do not know the answer, sorry.

I suppose that will be done monday then, as I suspect that they are not open saturdays.

I also am concerned that you are answering posts at 4am est on a friday night.

Thank you AA

haha, I've done worse...BETA party tomorrow if anyone wants to come :)
