Indecisive and running out of time

Good day everyone! I am going through a tough time choosing what track/course I should pursue. I don’t know what I want to do in the future. I am not that passionate about anything. Right now, all I know what I want to be is to become succesful. But in order to do that, I need to know what I want to do with my life. I am a very persistent person. I am scared to shift to another course if I choose the wrong one. I have been researching for career tests and it’s not helping. It’s making me more indecisive. Right now i’m thinking about Computer Engineering or Computer Science. I am not tech-y or anything. The reason why this course came up to me is that during my Computer class I am learning very well. All I know is that I am enjoying. Although, I am not that sure if I am THAT good in computers since we’re still learning the basics. How do I know if this is the right track for me? Am I going to be happy with this track?

As a fellow prospective Comp Sci major, I’ll give you some tips:

Deciding a major:
What subject are you best at?
What subject is your personal favorite?
What are your hobbies/skills?
What major has great employment & salary?
What major(s) don’t heavily limit your colleges?

Comp Sci vs Comp Eng
CS-Theory based, software, programming, more algebra-based
CE-Applying software to hardware, hardware & software, engineering, more trig/geometry based

CS has slightly better job employment, whereas CE has slightly better pay. CS is much more commonly found major than CE, as CE is commonly found as a concentration of electrical engineering.

Both highly prefer Physics & At least Pre-Calc(Although this is debateable depending on school, just be ready for Calc 1 in high school)

Here’s why I chose CS over CE:
-I prefer software. I want to learn specifically about software & how to create it.
-Doesn’t limit my college choice. CS is found at more colleges than CE, & CE is commonly found as a concentration for EE. CE is generally found at colleges w/ only engineering, & not every engineeting college has CE or EE with CE concentration. CS is found at colleges with Engineering,Technology, and Arts & Sciences.

Are you in HS? College?

Some thoughts:

  1. Go to your college’s career center and talk to them. They may have tests/tools that help you figure out what career (and therefore major) is best for you)

  2. What math/science courses did you take in HS and in college? What was your Math SAT score?
    I ask, because if you have not taken Calculus and got a low Math SAT score, you are not prepared for Engineering.

  5. Talk to the professor in your favorite class and see what they think

  6. Is there an engineering school at your college? Do you have to apply to get into it?

  7. Pre-med/sociology/public health/psychology are majors where you want to help people directly.
    Business/engineering/comp sci are majors where you want to solve technical/organizational problems.
    Which is more appealing to you?
