Independent science research?

Hi, I am a 9th grader who is looking to start doing some independent science research and maybe compete in some science fairs during the 2024-2025 school year. I am interested in physics and math, but I’m not sure how to start doing independent research.

I don’t really know how to pick a topic to research, and I also don’t know how to conduct experiments or tests without lab equipment.

I also have heard that students are supposed to find a mentor, but the teachers at my school are pretty clueless, so I’m not sure how to find a mentor.

Any tips would be really appreciated!
