Independent Study in Nepal??

Hello,

My school requires students to write an Extended Essay. This is a 4000 word minimum paper that is allowed to be on any topic. I have decided that I am going to take a trip to the Nepal/Tibet area my junior year to conduct primary research about the Hospital/Medical system in that region and how it affects the lives of the people and contrasts with the norm in developed countries. I am planning on spending a great deal of time on this paper and I hope (expect) to get it published somehow.

Would this be an example of a good/great extracurricular I can add on to my college apps? Most kids (all) in my school just research from their home on the computer, but I think i can kick ass on the paper especially if I have hands-on research.

Thanks a lot for commenting

IB!

That sounds awesome, frankly, and will certainly add color to your application. But I’m curious about two things: 1) How do you expect to get this paper published? and 2) Who’s paying for this trip? If it’s your parents who are footing the bill, this could end up looking more like a luxury vacation than a legitimate research endeavor.

Thanks a lot for applying. and yes IB!

I honestly just hope to get it published, but I know someone (not family) who said they could help me. They work for some sort of journal/magazine and that’s why I said expect, I really don’t want to get ahead of myself though.

My parents and I would split the trip down the middle with regards to cost. But I don’t think it would look like a vacation because the area I will be visiting are EXTREMELY impoverished and I would actually be volunteering with an established program while there. The paper itself is also something that I hope will lend credibility to the trip being for research purposes (not like I won’t love doing it though  )
