Independent Study / Lab Work

Everywhere I look, people applying to Ivies and other highly selective schools have boasted independent study or lab work. I’ve arranged to have a block of independent study for journalism next year…is this the same thing since it’s during school? And where can I do lab work or research…? I love science, am excelling (high 90s) in my AP Bio class…I would definately enjoy lab work. How can I be involved in this?

the ppl boasting about independent lab work wanted something nice to put as their extracurricular. However, w/o a rec or something published in the newspaper or having valid evidence of something significnat coming from that research, it amounts to nothing. If u enjoy lab work try to intern/volunteer somewhere. my friends did for UCLA, did what they enjoyed and got a rec from the guy they worked for.

Go to a local university and ask a professor if they have any work that you could do for them…be polite and take paper and a pen to write with and ask them what you should read to prepare to do work…attempt to convey that you would like to do research rather than just cleaning test tubes…
if you know a friend you has a professor you may be able to find out from them who might offer you a job…dont expect pay at first if you find one…but asking is the best way to get a job

I went to my local university and with the help of a professor i know i was able to target a professor that gives work to high schoolers and i walked in with a college chem textbook and a pad of paper and asked if he could give me a job…it worked out for me and you could try too…

just remember to be polite and bring something to write with…and maybe you will be able to find a job

Thank you, I’ll take your advice.

You can do lab work at your local university.
