Hey, sorry that this question is targeted for those who are basically international and from India, but I was curious as if you know whether the Indian Medical Common Entrance Test (MCET) is of similar questions and level as of the MCAT in for US Medical schools? I mean I know that the MCET has plants and biotechnology which is not on the MCAT, but for the remaining biology, plus chemistry and physics, are they basically the same? The reason why I am asking is because my parents may plan on buying some good review books from India which are could be much more helpful than those Kaplan and Barrons books etc…

Thanks.

I think MCET is for Undergraduate Medicine(MBBS) aspirants.

MBBS is the same degree as MD for international degree, but I am more curious about the exam content…

As far as I know, MCAT and MCET are very different. MCET is for 12th grade passout people.

Guys, I know what MCET is for as far as it used for people who finished 12th grade. It is not a special thing only in India. MOST European countries have students apply to MEDICAL SCHOOL after 12th grade. US is one of those few countries that makes a student do those 4 years of undergraduate.

Now my question isn’t asking you about what are the differences as in relation with 12th graders taking it in India and 3rd year students taking it in US. That is like an ‘obvious’ difference that you are pointing out.

My question is rather, in terms of content, because I have seen MCET questions and they are pretty tough in my opinion. It isn’t your ordinary easy AP exam or SAT II Biology. So I wanted to know if the content is similarly as tough as MCAT.

It might be pretty similar but I don’t know if the Indian test requires essays.

Is it true in India you can get a M.D. (or MBBS) in 5 years straight out of High School?

Yes. Its true.

MCET questions are very basic and from the Indian XI and XII standard only. Its not TOUGH. I dont think that it will be tough for 4yr graduates.
Sorry if my reply isnt helpful.

so you think MCAT is harder? ?

Although I am a rising freshman in college in the U.S, I have had the chance to check a few MCAT questions out and am familiar with the Indian Medical Entrance exam,…PMTs they call them,.
In reality, you can’t compare the the MCAT and PMTs in terms of general difficulty:

PMT is mostly application and memorization based test, whereas the MCAT involves reading a passage and then applying your concepts etc…
On the PMT, if you’re not good at memorizing facts, formulas, and doing very tough physics and chem problems fast, you are SCREWED.
On the MCAT, if you can’t focus your attention to the passage, or if you are not a good reader, critical thinker (for the reading passages), writer…you are SCREWED.
On the other hand, if you use COMPETITION as a measure of difficulty…the PMT is A LOT harder than MCAT,…especially considering that over hundreds of thousands of people take the test for a very limited no. of spots,…And that every point counts, and you are actually ranked, NOT USING PERCENTILES BUT ACTUAL numbers Eg. 4th out of 100,000 etc.

I have seen the difference between both the Premedical entrance examination or PMT(MCET) and MCATS.Ignorant people who have said the PMT is not tough think again, in India people in their 11th and 12th year of school study extremely hard for the medical entrance exam, often studying for 18 hours a day (no kiddin seen my indian friends slogging their butts off), it is nothing like the last two years of high school, where I know we do not learn a thing, since i attended high school in new york for my junior and senior year. People often take drops after finishing their 12th grade in India just to take this test. At the moment im in India and i see their course trust me it isnt easy, the competion makes it even harder. No doubt the MCATS are hard but do NOT underestimate the PMT’s…

Couldn’t Say It Any Better! :)

nope… again do not underestimate the MCET. With a populaton like that(ahemm the 2nd most populated country on the planet) fighting for the limited number of seats, they would not be that dumb giving them the easy way out.
ps:indian people are real smart.
almost every Doc I see is an indian :P

lol this is turning into an indian pride thread…Fact of the matter: an Indian education can be as difficult as they want to make it, but it will never match the quality and recognition associated with an American education.

Except for IIT and IIM.

Yeah, IIT is pretty ridiculous.

Why would you revive a 2 year old thread?

hey
I’d like to know wether the MCET can only be taken by indian students who have done
10+2? Im an indian, but ive done IGCSE and not the indian curriculum, it lasts upto 11 years. Is it possible that i could take the MCET this summer and join a medical college for a premedical course?

according to my uncle and his friends who went to medical school in india, getting into 1 medical school in the U.S. is MUCH HARDER than getting into 1 indian medical school…
