~Adides:

can any1 enlighten me about where the name “India” came from? Also, ‘Bharat’ vs. ‘Hindustan’ vs. ‘India’…have always wondered bout it…

The name India has come from the name of the river Sindu.

Sindu, as you must be knowing, is the river on the banks of which the first known civilization began and flourished in this part of the world. Hence, the land near and beyond the Sindu came to be called Sind, a name which remains still today for a province in Pakistan.

The people who inhabited the world beyond Persia, that is near or around the middle-east, used to spell the
S’ as
H’ during pronunciation of the word Sind. The reason for this is that the sound of
Ssss’ and the sound of
Hhhh’ is produced by the continuous flow of air through the mouth.

Hence, Sind came to be called Hind in the immediate western parts.

The news and facts about a prosperous land called Hind beyond a river Hindu had reached the Europeans, a land full of wealth, spices, pearls etc. The Europeans came to India with the arrival of Vasco DaGama at the port of Calicut in Kerala on May 20, 1948. After arriving, the Europeans asked about a river Hindu about which they had heard a lot in the past. But the local people dismissed the existence of any river by that name, but pointed out that a river by the name Sindu had existed all along.

Confused, the Europeans report back to Europe that no river exists by the name Hindu, but one that exists is called Sindu. Due to the uncertainty in the first letter, they referred to the river as `Indu’ without including the uncertain first letter (S or H) when they send in the reports and news back to Europe.

All writing in Europe began referring the river as Indu.

Later the discrepancy of the first letter was resolved when it was known that the real name, or the local name, was Sindu and not Hindu.

When this information reached back Europe, most of the writings had already christened the river as Indu. So, the letter S was put at the end of the name and the river SINDU came to called INDUS by the west.

Now that you have Indus under your control, Adides, yoou can figure out where the name India comes from.

INDIA = The land of INDUS.
SIND = The land of Sindu.
HIND = The land of Hindu.

Adides, hope that it helped.

The CollegeConfidential, or CC as it is popularly called around here, was referred to me by Prashant a.k.a. mercurysquad. I occasionally visited CC to check upon, you may like the phrase `spy upon’, the status and happenings in this tiny and beautiful world called the Indian Thread. Though never contributed even a single alphabet to this thread, I came to know of a lot people who with their colours painted a beautiful picture of this little world and who in their voices barked in here all day and night which resonated at the end like a sweet song sung along together. Sucharita, Adides, Neha, Astrix, Premanjali, Nomad, Ritz, Callthecops, Laila, Mercurysquad and all others who carved out a space in here and made it into a mirror of the world they came from. Each contribution, each word, each thought and each pain shared here like a family, this thread the Indian Thread truly was marvellous.

How can you all think of writing the obituary of this thread before it has given up. “It’s not over, until it is all over”.
