<p>hmmm good point- but since dear premanjali was the source of this information I am feeling more miffed than is my wont since I am relatively more polite on CC than I am over the phone and Premanjali unlike my other friends actually does frequent these boards.</p>
I’m not an expert, but the way I see it is -
Computer software that translates from one language to another does not have a very important ability that us humans do - understanding the context. Humans also have common sense and general knowledge. A computer program does not understand that, and thus uses only the information it has. In this case, it is the sentence you ask it to translate; which it does using its internal word tables. Now, the mappings are not one-to-one (one word can have many meanings and many words can have the same meaning). Therefore, (mathematically) it’s not a one-one function, hence does not have a perfect inverse function. So you get funny results when you try to invert it.</p>
<p>It reminds me of speech recognition software. The following caption was on official t-shirts of Apple employees that were working on its speech recognition engine -</p>
