Indiana University

My son was accepted at IU. He has good grades/SAT scores and was given a merit scholarship. My question: is there any advantage to his applying as a “direct admit” to Arts and Sciences? Also, has anyone minored in music – jazz? Any comments?

Well, the music, foreign language, and business schools (probably in that order) are considered to be the best schools at the university, so I would expect that having a minor in music couldn’t hurt. I don’t know anything about “direct admit” to Arts and Sciences, though.

Dear Jasperr,

Probably the greatest benefit of being a direct admit to the College of Arts and Sciences is that your son will be considered for a $1,000 per year ($4,000 in total) scholarship. Also, your son will be able to still change his major to something besides the one which he was admitted into. So, as long as your son wants to major in something in the College of Arts and Sciences, there are no cons to being a direct admit. If you, or your son, has any more questions feel free to ask, since I am in the college’s direct admit program.

I wouldn’t put Business over Journalism. I do agree though, that the Music department is the best department at this university.

Yes, A2Wolves6 is correct–I should have mentioned the journalism department as well.

so you are saying that Journalism program is onne of the best?
Is that written Journalism or Broadcast J. or both?

He is referring to the School of Journalism.

The Journalism school is named after Ernie Pyle–the war correspondent who travelled with the troops during World War II–and died on the front lines.

For more on Ernie Pyle, see the following website:

[CNN - ‘Ernie Pyle’s War’ - August 25, 1998](http://www.cnn.com/books/beginnings/9808/ernie.pyle.cnn/)

Indiana University’s journalism school has been in the top 10 ranked journalism schools for about 30 years in a row now. I think some of the other top-ranked journalism programs are at the University of Missouri (Columbia) and Syracuse University. (These are all written journalism programs I’m referring to here).
