Indie/Artsy/Alternative/What-have-you Films

chocolat (with johnny depp and juliette binoche) is adorable;
*the motorcycle diaries – one of the best movies i’ve seen in a long time, even if it does gloss over che a bit – it’s still a knockout;
kinsey wasn’t indie or anything, but pretty controversial, and again more of the glossing over the ‘hero’ (or whatever), but still good;
*the dangerous lives of altar boys – emile hirsch (girl next door, lords of dogtown) and whatshisname (macaulay’s little brother) culkin, so funny and surprisingly significant;
*before sunrise, if you’re a girl. it’s only slightly pretentious, mostly sweet and romantic, about two twentysomethings (a parisian and an american) who meet on a train and spend a night walking around vienna and talking. the sequel, *before sunset, is also but not quite as good.

or you could just pop in sex and the city. that about covers everything.

Edit. harold and kumar is hilarous, if you’re counting it. great movie if you’re in a good mood and want to see a slew of ridiculous misadventures.
hotel rwanda is powerful. i think that’s the best word for it.

I agree with whoever suggested Lost in Translation. I watched it expective to either love it or hate it, and I am happy to say it was the former.

Requiem for a Dream and Trainspotting are both wicked.

Ghost World was hilarious!

Garden State was very cute but tried a bit too hard, imho.

Some of those foreign films you guys mentioned wouldn’t really be considered ‘indie’ films in their countries of origin, fyi.

I think foreign films fall under the “what-have-you” category.

anything by david fincher is great

I completely, wholheartedly second “The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys” and “Trainspotting”.

Others:

Igby Goes Down, Stage Beauty, Men With Brooms, My Life So Far, Velvet Goldmine, About Adam…

Velvet Goldmine is a real mind-****. Took me days to get over it. But naked!Ewan was definitely worth seeing.

Igby Goes Down just made me feel like a really decent human being.

I could make a long list. But I’m not going to…

lately I’ve been interested in a few movies.

First, www.imdb.com is your friend. their top 250 movie list is gold

Anyway, here’s some movies.

Primer - the movie won a huge prize at sundance. The film maker is actually an engineer from dallas who taught himself how to make movies. he had a 4000 budget and made a film that looked like it was on a much larger budget. It’s kind of science fictiony but its a movie that has so many layers you’ll want to watch it over and over.

Nobody Knows - Japanese film, about 4 kids abandoned by their monther. The eldest son of the group has to help his family live while having no money. Based on a true story.

Oldboy - Korean Film, Chan Woo Park. Fricken Awesome. It’s about a guy who’s put in a hotel room for like 10 or 15 years and then is suddenly released and he’s supposed to figure out why he was put in the room to begin with. Really cool, vengeance galore in this movie.

Chan Woo Park also has a film called Sympathy For Mr Vengeance which is also just as good.

Roger Dodger - movie about a kid who goes to his smooth talking uncle for help with girls. Really dialogue driven. Awesome kinda coming of age film thats funny.

The Sea Inside - def one of my all-time favorites. also, Better Luck Tomorrow – has the guy from Harold and Kumar (John Cho) in it. Excellent movies.

run lola run, memento, magnolia, thomas crown affair, a clockwork orange, amelie, spirited away, dummy, fletch, oldboy, ping pong, wet hot american summer, sex is zero, save the green planet, the royal tennenbaums, say anything, the virgin suicides, eternal sunshine, better off dead, donnie darko, this is spinal tap…

most of these films are foreign, if youre into that kind of thing.

magnolia, goodfellas, naked lunch, time bandits, blue velvet, chinatown, north by northwest

FOCK garden state

I see you feel a little strongly about Garden State. Lol.

The Life Aquatic
with Steve Zissou

Dude, I’m with ptmagnolia on Garden State. Ew.

virgin suicides–quirky

finally! a girl that does not like garden state. i’m in love…

The Piano (with Holly Hunter as a mute)

Ghost World helped me through high school…kidding…sort of…

velvet goldmine rocks.

This is Spinal Tap (alternative i guess) is a must.

Roger Dodger is amusing and depressing (in a good way)

Dangerous Lives of Altar boys is great.

Goodbye Lenin (the star is amazing, see him in “Ladies in Lavender”)

Spirited Away is lovely.

My friends and I are into Asian indie films.

“In the Mood for Love” - Very slow pace, but absolutely beautiful. Chinese.

“Chungking Express” - Multiple stories all connected, presented by Tarantino, very entertaining. Chinese.

“Branded to Kill” - Hard to find, and even harder to understand! It’s seriously artsy-60’s, and got the director banned from the industry. Japanese.

“Fallen Angels” - Similar to Chungking, but darker. Very good. Chinese.

L’auberge espagnole.
it’s excellent
i quote pulp fiction religiously
y tu mama tambien = amazing
welcome to the doll house
