Individual Attention

I hope one of you guys can help me. I was accepted to Tisch and am very excited. However, I also got accepted into a smaller program at another school and I was wondering if Tisch offered the kind of individualized attention available at some of the other universities.

Thanks in advance for your help!

My daughter is a recent graduate of Tisch’s BFA Drama program. She also studied in two different studios, CAP21 and ETW. I feel she got a LOT of individual attention from teachers. She also had advisors within each studio. She has worked closely with many faculty (some even after graduation). I observe people who think a larger program means less individualized attention than a smaller program. What they may not realize is that the CLASS SIZE is the same either way. The class sizes in Tisch studios tend not to surpass 15 students, and so this is similar to a class size in a smaller program. The difference is that there are more faculty and so the ratio of faculty to student is similar regardless of the size of the program. The class sizes are similar. What is different is that over the course of four years, you have the opportunity to mix with more students beyond a core group of 15-20, and also work with a variety of faculty rather than a few professors in a small department. The amount of attention is about the same. The studios have small classes and would feel similar to small program. There just are more classes for each year/grade.

Also, IN studio classes, there is individual attention such as working on your own songs, monologues, scenes (w/partner), etc. For example, I observed a class at U of Michigan where the focus was on performing/acting a song. There were about 14 students in the class and only two kids presented that day and were coached in front of the class. This is similar to classes of that topic that my D had at Tisch where about 15 students are in a class and individuals have their turn to be coached on their song.
