Does anyone have recommendations for inexpensive (relatively speaking, of course!) lodging in London? Not interested in hostels because private accommodations are charged on a per person basis and end up, in most cases, being more than some small hotels/b&bs. I’d prefer centrally located, clean and safe.

Last year we stayed at base2stay Kensington and were very happy with our choice. Check out the reviews on trip advisor.

I love all these England threads on CC today! We used Priceline and got a great rate at the Hilton Olympia. Usually big chains are not my choice, but this worked just fine. The Kensington High Street Tube stop is walkable (15-20 minutes?), but there is also good connecting bus service leaving from the front door of the hotel. The Kensington Olympia Tube stop is closer, but we didn’t use it because the schedule was infrequent and inconvenient.

Several years ago we stayed at Hotel California (don’t you just love the name!). The room was TINY (the ceiling was higher than any other room dimension), and it certainly wasn’t a great hotel – but it wasn’t the worst one I’ve ever stayed at either. It was very reasonable for a London hotel.

Today, if I were looking, I’d head straight for tripadvisor. I rank the hotels and go down the list until I find the one with the highest ranking in a neighborhood I want with the lowest price.

FYI, if you have more than two/three people, they may not allow you to stay in a hotel room; I know of a family who ended up renting a flat (gorgeous!!) for less $$ than equivalent hotel rooms…

I think they used www.vrbo.com

I’ve just got back from a wonderful trip to London and our second stay at a great hotel – the Montague on the Gardens, in Bloomsbury, right next to the British Museum. I can’t say enough good things about this hotel. Personal, attentive staff and service, great location (2 blocks from Russell Square tube stop), yet quiet, not a lot of hub-bub. On our first stay a year ago, we were only there for two nights, en route to the West Country, but we knew we wanted to try it again for a longer stay, and were not disappointed. Also ranks very highly at tripadvisor.

Try Premier Hotels. They have various ones throughout London. Just go to their website to see all of their locations. I am looking for the same things, going to London in July and have had a hard time finding inexpensive but clean hotels. Be forewarned: London is very expensive and even a nice hotel will have a very tiny room…I made reservations at the Premier for two nights, then have made one reservation at the Alexandra Hotel-Guest House near Paddington Station since we wanted to be near Paddington since we have an early flight in the morning. We are a family of 4 and we have reserved quad rooms, which is usually one double and two twin beds, or four twins. Also realize that most London hotels do not have elevators so take that into consideration when making your reservation. The Premier we are staying at is near Earl’s Court underground station.

While we are on the subject, we are really going to Ireland for most of the time, anyone know any good but inexpensive places to stay, like bed and breakfast or hotels, in Ireland, like Dublin, Shannon, Cork, etc or any town in between?

Thanks, I’m checking all this out. It’s only 2 people, and I’m familiar with the size (or lack thereof!) of English hotel rooms!

Last winter we stayed at the Bloomsbury Hotel on Great Russell Street. The room was small but we liked the hotel very much. It is just a block or so from the Tottenham Court tube station and walking distance from Covent Garden if you like to walk.

Also in Bloomsbury and located on a crescent with a number of other B&Bs, my D and I stayed at the Mentone before she moved into residence at UCL, which is nearby. Tube stop and British Museum close by too.

[Mentone Hotel, London UK](http://www.mentonehotel.com/index.html)

It was very reasonable for London, and we were perfectly satisfied. Full breakfast included. They gave us a room for three people though, one of the bigger ones for the same rate as a double. Don’t know what the doubles are like.

For the other B&Bs on that crescent, google Cartwright Gardens B&Bs…maybe the names of the others will come up…I can’t remember the names.

Just remembered another one on the crescent…George Hotel
http://www.george-hotel-london.co.uk/

We have stayed at The George a couple of times, too. Nothing fancy, but when we are in London, we are out all day and just want our room to be a place where we can crash. Easy walking distance to the British Museum. Great full English breakfast included!

We used Expedia and found a wonderful hotel (the Rembrandt) with airfare (Virgin Atlantic) for $1600 for a eight night stay. The rate included breakfast and all taxes. Our rooms (there were four of us) connected and were beautiful. Location, Knightsbridge, across from the Victoria and Albert was perfect.

Don’t discount (sorry) using the name brand travel sites. Sometimes they come up a winner.

We like the K&K George (different from the George) near Earl’s Court. There’s not too much near the hotel itself, except some inexpensive restaurants, but it’s convenient to the tube.

I am going to second the reco for Base2Stay. Very nice and very close to the Tube.

Novotel Tower Bridge was perfect for four of us. It’s in the financial district near the Tower of London and tube station.

Another nice place was the Belgravia b and b. We needed two rooms for four of us but the breakfast was amazing!

Premier Inn and Travelodge (not the same as the USA Travelodge) are two of the more inexpensive hotel chains in the UK.

A family member recently stayed at the Premier Inn Euston which is right across from the British Library (worth seeing - they have a copy of the Magna Carta as well as many early bibles, etc. on display) and walking distance from the Euston and Kings Cross tube stations. If you’re coming in via Heathrow you can take the tube from Heathrow airport right to Kings Cross station (I think) and it’s an inexpensive and direct way to get there. Another point, since the person was arriving earlier in the day it was important to have a place to drop the luggage. Many hotels either don’t have a place to leave luggage or they charge you for it. The Premier Inn accepted the luggage at no charge.

Check out the rates and you’ll likely find that the Premier Inn and Travelodge hotels are usually less expensive than most other places. They’re not necessarily full of character or anything but they’re usually adequate and have some level of standard. I think the Premier Inn is usually just somewhat of a cut above Travelodge in most cases.
