A friend suggested noise canceling headphones might help ADD S2 tune out ambient noise while studying, but I’m not paying hundreds for Bose. Does anyone know if a less expensive good quality alternative?

Costco used to carry Able Planet phones for $59-60. They were not audiphile quality, but served D really well. You might want to take your son to Fry’s or a similar place and have him try several styles, because if he plans on wearing headphones for hours at a time, comfort matters as much as sound quality.

Ask your S2 if he thinks they will help. I thought they’d be great for my ADD S2 but he refuses to even give it a try. Not sure why he won’t, but he doesn’t want to wear them.

I have some inexpensive Phillips ear buds that I use for airplane travel. Love them. About 30 bucks.

VAMom–your son probably won’t try them because you suggested it!

Thanks! He seemed open to trying them. Good point, BB, maybe I’ll wait until he’s home for thanksgiving.

You’re singing my song! On a layover in Denver a few years ago, I decided I wanted some inexpensive noise canceling headphones - I went to the electronic shop at the airport. I told the sales person, inexpensive and easy o travel with. He suggested these - at the time they were $35, the least expensive. I bought them. I LOVE them. They are not Bose, nor any other top-of-the-line, BUT they do the trick nicely. I travel with them, and use them at all sorts of times and places. 2 months ago someone asked me where I got them, and I looked them up on Amazon, and saw they were now under $20, and even though I don’t need another pair, bought them for what I call the “just in cases” -

My S bought noise-cancelling Sony headphones at Target during his freshman year. I think they were around $50. He said they worked fine, but they were more “noise-reducing” than noise cancelling. He wears them while studying in his dorm room. .

Wow! JustAMom, thanks very much! Those are so cheap I had to give them a try!

My son the audio geek recommends Sennheiser. I find them a bit on the heavy side, though.

These are similar to what D used:

My husband went to home depot and got a pair of over the ear hearing protection headphones. He will also use bufs to listen to music under these. Loves them for working undisturbed at his office.

I suggest borrowing a pair for a day or two before buying, at any price level. I used the Bose QuietComfort 15 once on a flight and while they did make a difference, especially in the lower rumble sounds, it was not silent. So many reviews make it seem like you’re going to be stepping into a sound vacuum, but I did not find that to be the case.
