I feel like this virus is getting closer and closer . . . And having many many more chances to become more transmissible.

Just horrible.

This is getting scary. A boy in Canada was in the ICU with it, no known exposure… but he had a pet cat. Cat probably went outside, killed a sick bird, brought it to the boy. It is in cattle, domestic fowl, felines. Getting closer to humans. Once it is transmissible between humans, it is again pandemic time.

Stanford Medicine scientists design workaround that improves response to flu vaccine.

Stitching together four molecules found in the standard flu vaccine ensures an immune response to all of them, Stanford Medicine scientists have shown.

There is considerable concern about a viral strain that could cause the next devastating pandemic: namely avian or ā€œbird flu,ā€ which recently has been detected in wastewater and milk in California, Texas and other parts of the United States. While this type of flu is not yet able to be transmitted easily between human beings, it could mutate to gain this ability and thus is considered a major risk-in-waiting.

The scientists further showed that they could substantially boost the antibody response to bird flu by vaccinating tonsil organoids with a five-antigen construct connecting the four seasonal antigens along with the bird-flu hemagglutinin, as opposed to getting a tepid response when vaccinating with just the bird-flu hemagglutinin or combining it with the four seasonal antigens on different constructs.

ā€œOvercoming subtype bias this way can lead to a much more effective influenza vaccine, extending even to strains responsible for bird flu,ā€ Davis said. ā€œThe bird flu could very likely generate our next viral pandemic.ā€

There is recent production H5N1 vaccine stockpile in the US, but it is between 4.8 million and 10 million doses, far fewer than the US population: US to double bird flu vaccine stockpile as H5N1 infections rise

There may also be some doses from the early 2000s: https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/avian-influenza-bird-flu/study-suggests-earlier-us-licensed-h5n1-vaccines-prompt-antibodies-current

Also includes notes in H5N1 and H5N9 bird flu.
