Does anyone know of some websites that give information about how competitive certain grad schools are - for example, what percentage of people who apply get in. Specific school websites often do not give that info. I know this might be overgeneralized…

You might get better luck by posting your field. Here’s some good info for those interested in computer science: http://www.cs.utep.edu/admissions/deptlist.html

I plan to apply to schools that offer master’s degrees in human development.

You can always call the school and ask, but most do not like to give out that information as it can be interpreted in a lot of ways.

However, ask yourself why you want to know. Will it change where you are applying or will it just give you some sort of peace of mind. If you have the qualifications of the program, then it’s best to apply. Some years some programs get low applicant rates and accept almost everyone, others, like when there is not a lot of employment opportunities, there is a boom in applications and they accept fewer students.

Since you don’t know who else is applying for those spots it is best just to throw caution to the wind and try, you might be extremely suprised at who bites. Grad schools are looking for academic performers, but also they like to have diversity in the class. My guess is that in knowing, it probably wouldn not change where you apply (and it shouldn’t) so, don’t waste your time- just go out and apply and see what happens!!!

Doesn’t US News & World Reports publish that sort of information? I’m away from my bookshelves right now, but they publish a good, comprehensive review every year of graduate programs, and I believe they include number of applications and number of acceptances in their breakdown of statistics by field of study.

US News online premium addition will give you average gre or percentiles as well as admittance rates for PhD and Master’s programs but only for Med, Bus, Law, Engineering, and Education.
