This was sooo helpful thank you so much!!!

It’s a new year and lots of new first years here! There are plenty of people here to help, so if you have any questions that you didn’t see answered feel free to ask!! Congratulations on being a new Wahoo, you’re going to LOVE IT!!! :)

Hey guys, a few questions!
I will be attending Orientation Session H, so I won’t be able to go see dorms and stuff before. We find out dorms assignment soon, but I have a few questions regarding move in day in general…

Do we buy all of the closet storage stuff we need before? (i.e. like a hanging 6-box sweater organizer or shoe-organizer) or do we go to see the dorm dimensions first and then buy it another time?

Do we need a fridge or can we get by without one? Thanks!

That depends on where you are coming from. If you are in-state, or you live near enough to drive, you might find it helpful to buy storage beforehand, and drive over with it. I was out of state, so I bought some things beforehand and shipped them, but also went shopping with my parents on move-in day. You can plan based on dimensions given on the housing website, once you get your assignment.

You can certainly survive without a fridge, but having one is very useful. You are not going to want to eat at the dining hall for every meal (trust me). If you want to have breakfast in your room, for example, you need somewhere to keep your milk. If you go out to eat or order in pizza, you need somewhere to keep your leftovers. Often, roommates will decide who will bring a fridge and who will bring a microwave, and then you will share both.

Hope that helps. Welcome to UVA

Ahh, ok, thank you so much! I’m in-state so I guess it will be easier to get stuff. I’m really excited :)

Hey I have a question. Do most roommates share fridges, because I don’t see how they can share a mini fridge they are so small

Sent from my DROID2 using CC

^^^Yes they do UVA. There is plenty of room for each person to keep stuff

I shared a mini fridge my 2nd - 4th years with my roommate. My first year we each had our own and it was unnecessary. I got a freezer my 2nd or 3rd year and so we spread things out by doing that. Also I had the microwave and she had the fridge so that worked, too.

Thanks guys

Hey guys! I have a few questions about the “big purchases.”
First, will my TI-84 Silver be fine for Calc III and beyond as a math major or should I upgrade now? If so, what to- the TI-89?

Second, should I get a microfridge or a separate microwave and fridge? Should I rent from the school (I have heard their fridges are gross but opinions?) or buy one?

Do I need a TV? If I get a TV should I get cable? Do you even have time to watch TV?

Thanks so much!

Welcome!

Students aren’t allowed to use calculators in calc classes at UVa. Depending on your other classes you might want the TI-89 (physics, for example).

I’d speak to your roommate first. Sometimes they have already bought or been given one or the other. That makes the decision a bit easier. Coordinating is good! I would not buy a microfridge as you won’t really need one past first year. Even on-grounds housing for upperclassmen have fridge’s. We rented a microfridge for my son and he split the cost w/ his rm. It looked brand new.

This is really a personal decision. Again, coordinate with your roommate/suitemates. Depending on your specific dorm you may have a lounge on your floor with a flat screen. If you do bring a TV you will need cable. If you have one in your room it can be a social draw for other people. Depending on your personality this can be a good or bad thing. My son didn’t have one in his room, didn’t have much time, and didn’t really miss it beyond Sunday football. He always found somewhere to watch games.

Thank you so much- that was really helpful :)

^ My pleasure. Feel free to ask anything else you think of. I have found people here are exceptionally helpful. Enjoy your last few weeks of summer. Wahoowa! :)

Ok, I have a question regarding the Math courses offered there. I am Indian, and consider myself ok at Math. I have had a one year exposure to Calculus and am confused between the Math 1210 and 1310. I am planning to take Commerce or Economics as a major. I have done the basics of Calc in Differentiation(Maxima-Minima, Increasing-Decreasing Functions, Double Differentiation, etc) and Integration(Curve Sketching, Area Under Curves,Etc).

Any Suggestions on what i should do?

Yash2011 - You might want to post this is the main forum as it’s own thread. It will get more visibility there.

My son didn’t have a TV. Instead, he used our family’s Netflix subscription on his laptop. I recommend not having a TV - there are too many things to do in college that you could miss if you sit in front of a TV. You can catch up on TV over the summer.

Are there a good amount of places around campus to watch football (nfl)?

You can get cable in your dorm for pretty cheap, there are also lounges and other common areas though I don’t know how much control you have over what is on TV there (especially if you are wanting to watch the whole game – though I imagine in a guy’s suite it would be popular). You could also go to one of the places on the Corner (restaurants/bars) that broadcasts. I imagine the best solution is to bring a TV and get cable if you are really into sports and want to make sure you get to watch, have a mini fridge and invite some friends over. We used to have project runway parties in my room my first year (is that the girl equivalent? lol) since I had a decent sized TV and cable. My dorm (Brown College) also had a reservation system for the lounge where first come first serve you could reserve the TV for video games, shows, etc. Advantage of having it in your room is that you could watch and do homework.

My daughter was recently accepted, and is also an Echols Scholar. Can you direct me to the link to put a deposit down for housing (if that is how it is done at UVA)- she will not make her final decision concerning where she will go until April, but do we need to put a deposit on a dorm? I looked on the UVA website, but could not find my answer. Thank you!

There is no action to take on housing until late May/early June. :)
