Info for Incoming 1st Years

idk where else to put this, but I’m wondering what campus diversity/acceptance is like. I’m openly gay and I know the Virginia is in the south, but I just wanna know if i can hold hands in public basically

I’m really trying hard to not to be offended that I think you are implying that Virginia isn’t a safe place or supportive of marriage equality, or for that matter just because a state is “in the south” it means everyone’s going to hate you for being openly gay. I understand if you’re out of state so maybe you’re not familiar with Virginia, but the DC metropolitan area (northern VA) is one of the most liberal places in the country and while that political ideology may not be true for the entire state, a sizable number of people at UVA are from NOVA and yes it would be perfectly safe to be openly gay at UVA. Makes me a little sad to think that people think Virginians are going to jump them just because they’re holding hands with someone of the same sex. @musicizlyfe

Yes, Cville is a very tolerant place, just like northern Va. (which is the most populated part of the state). However, I don’t know if I would suggest openly holding hands if you happen to visit rural southern virginia.

I think asking about the climate of LGBTQ acceptance at UVA is a fair question. @musicizlyfe , I think you will find there are many resources and a supportive community at UVA for LGBTQ students. It’s not perfect - at a school this big of course there are some students with prejudices. But you can find your people and be just fine.

Also this thread is massive, so to prospective students posting questions - please think about creating a new thread for your query (or, even better, reading through this thread and searching the archives - most questions have already been answered at some point or another.)

I have a few questions: In my SIS account, it says my application is incomplete, and has a list of “outstanding” items including my transcripts. But I believe I already turned my transcripts in through parchment, before turning my common app for EA. And do I have to submit the mid year report? Isn’t that only available in 2017?

You should have your mid-year report submitted as soon as it becomes available, which for most students will not be until Dec. or Jan.

Hi everyone! Just got accepted EA OOS and I was wondering what the difficulty of coursework is like. Is UVA seen as a stressful school or no? Is there grade deflation?

@doorrealthe what were your scores on standardized tests, and your weighted and unweighted GPA? Im a junior in HS looking to apply EA for the fall semester of 2018.

@doorrealthe I have heard that first-year courses are rigorous but not overly so. As a State flagship they have an obligation to educate students from around the state. Therefore they cannot hold a freshman from Appalachia to the same standard as one from Fairfax County.

@RCHays1 2300 old SAT, 800 math 2, 3.85 UW GPA and 4.5 W
@londondad thanks!

This is absolutely not true. We live in the western part of the state (not NOVA or even close to it). When my D matriculated, there was no distinction as to where you came from - whether it be Fairfax or coal country. The simple fact was that you were now a UVA student and had to meet UVA standards. If you needed extra help, it was up to you to get it or you would pay the consequences with your grades.

I’d also point out that intro courses are not limited to first year students - when my D was a 4th year she took an intro level course. Some lower level courses are extremely difficult. In SEAS there is a “bridge” program suggested for students who may have more difficulty than other students making the transition to UVA level work.

There have been claims for years that it is harder to be admitted to UVa from No. Va. than from the rest of the state, which the admissions office vehemently denies. As stated above, the profs do not care where you come from. Everyone is competing on the same field once you are enrolled. I would guess that the pre-Comm and pre-Med students would need to be very competitively oriented, but that the average student is not extremely competitive against other students.

A bigger problem is that so many students were at the very top of their high school class, and now at UVa they are suddenly an average student. That takes some adjustments in the first semester. There are some profs who will be extra critical in grading their first assignments because they want to shock students into realizing that high school level work will no longer be sufficient.
