Info for Incoming 1st Years

Most phones, any carrier, have trouble in first year dorms. I have AT&T though and never have problems. Verizon has good reception too, and are not in extended network anymore

I’m an entering freshman (girl) and I was wondering what type of bags do people mostly wear. backpacks? Those are the most comfortable probably, but I know my cousin who goes there carries around some kind of…large tote.

What do you all recommend?

I have Verizon, I have no problems with it or higher rates.

Nearly everyone in the College carries totes (mostly girls maybe?), while students in Eschool more typically have backpacks. I love a tote. I had a backpack all through high school, and have not regretted the switch. Plus, if you want to take your laptop to class, you should have a good laptop bag. I have a nice one from ebags (dotcom) that my mom got my first year. I don’t know how I would live without it. It is pink and really cute but still durable. You can just throw stuff in the tote, I can’t imagine having to zip up everything all the time anymore.

there are all different kind of bags. a lot of people carry backpacks, but some people prefer to carry a tote or messenger bag. it’s just whatever you prefer. the thing i would be careful about is if you want to carry your laptop in a tote, make sure it’s strong enough to handle the weight if you have one of the heavier computers. (same with big books like chem/bio) you don’t want to rip the handles out lugging around a bunch of stuff
vera bradley things are pretty common here of course (i’m a fan) and they’re well-made so they’re strong enough to handle lots of books and my laptop.
but there’s no distinction or anything like “sorority girls only care totes” or “just the nerds/lame people carry backpacks” nothing like that. just pick what you find most convenient.

haha oh i never noticed the distinction between eschool and the college

here’s a helpful link that may or may not have already been posted:

[UVa Class Schedule for Fall 2010 (Unofficial. Lou’s List)](http://rabi.phys.virginia.edu/mySIS/CS/index.php)

you can be thinking about what classes you want to take and start planning out your schedule

…or at least I was excited enough to do this last year. maybe I’m just a little too preoccupied with planning though :)

^Haha, same here.

But in my case, I just stare at the list, and blank out. It makes me excited to see what classes there are, though.

…if only my diligence could match up. :p

There’s also a list they’ll give you at orientation of the most interesting classes with no prerequisites (at least for College students, not eschool, poor eschoolers with their set schedules), things like Bioethics and How Things Work and stuff like that.

^ah, so they will give a list of interesting classes with no pre-requisite at orientation. I planned to make a thread in the future to ask if there are any such classes, but it looks like it’s not needed.

This isn’t related to anything else, but I was pretty grossed out by the guys hall bathroom in McCormick that I saw over the weekend at U.Va. It looked like the showers were “jail style” with no individual stalls or curtains. I’m used to lacrosse and basketball camps with communal bathrooms with stalls, but I don’t really feel like seeing a bunch of naked guys every morning. I didn’t know colleges even had these anymore… Has anyone heard anything about this?

I’ve never heard anything good or bad about Old Dorms bathrooms. I don’t know how the suite style ones in New Dorms compare. I know in Brown College you NEVER go into a guy’s bathroom as a girl because they are gross since Brown College residents have to clean their own bathrooms.
It might also be that the curtains got super nasty so they got rid of them, I’m not sure. :</p>

Can you just request a single on your application, and if so, are you guaranteed to get a single? and are you then more likely to get into hereford since they have mostly singles?

Also, what is the difference between the three residential college program and the first year program?

You’re never guaranteed anything when it comes to housing, but if you request a single you will most likely get one (in hereford). You can always switch with someone who does not want a single on these boards or facebook or whatnot as well if you don’t get one.

FYP is the typical dorms experience. Res Colleges include upperclassmen and have their own non-first-year personalities so it is up to you if you think you would rather live with upperclassmen because you fit into the personality of the res college, or if you just want the normal first year experience living with just first years. Search the boards for more info on each particular res college (Brown has a lot of info, many people on these boards end up there for one reason or another! But it is not for everyone).

As far as I know hereford complex (Malone, Weedon, Johnson) won’t be first year housing next year. It’s going to be upperclass, and they’re putting first years more in gooch/dillard (which is mostly suite-style singles I think?)
Obviously you can still apply for Hereford college (Norris and Whyburn), but like hazel said, it’s not only first-years.
This year though, almost all of the people on my hall are in singles (I’m in Hereford complex) but none of them requested a single. So it appears that they have more singles than they get requests for?

Yes like I said if you don’t get one for whatever strange reason then you can definitely find someone to trade with who didn’t want to be there. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

hey guys,

I am thinking of applying to IRC for housing as a first year. I was just wondering, if I don’t get in, then do they just put me anywhere there is space? Or will I get a preference of where I want to house (I know there is no guarantee of getting the preferred choice)?

It would be great if you guys could help!

Thanks

They’ll go by preference, you rank the four options of First Year Housing, Brown, IRC, and Hereford and so they would put you in your next available option. But IRC usually has room so there’s no reason you wouldn’t get in.

thanks a lot!

Princetongirl, I lived in Hancock years ago and the closets did have several drawers.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I’ll probably (hopefully) be placed in Hereford college (I think hereford complex malone, etc will be only transfer and upperclassmen housing next year according to website).
But since the college is first years through fourth years, will it be hard making friends? most of the upperclassmen probably know each other. so how do I find the other first years? O_O? they probably don’t put all first years in the same hall…
