Info on Norwalk/New Haven CT Needed

"My son was just invited to interview for a residency in Newark, but it sounds like the the interview could be in either town. "

What kind of residency?

I’ll p.m. you.

Flying into Westchester County Airport looks less expensive than any city airports. The shuttle service is pretty expensive, at $102 each way, to Norwalk. Renting a car would be less expensive. How bad would the drive be from White Plains to Norwalk?

I think the flight to Westchester County Airport, (HPN) and a rental car is the best way to go. Check with the rental companies on any age restrictions or surcharges if he is under 25. The airport is adjacent to I-684 and easy to get to Norwalk, I-684 South to I-287 East to I-95 North. The hospital area, if that is where the internship is located, is right off I-95.

Toledo, easy drive from airport. Probably about 30 minutes if it’s not evening rush hour.

Fly into NY and take CT Limo to Norwalk, or fly into Hartford-Bradley and rent a car (which could open up more options for looking at places to live etc.). Don’t bother looking into New Haven -Tweed airport; it will be expensive.

Norwalk has some nice areas (SoNo or South Norwalk) is a couple of blocks with coffeehouses and restaurants and houses some corporate offices. It’s primarily a working class town wedged in the middle of upper class suburbs. Nowalk Hospital is well respected in the area, if that’s where he’s headed. Good luck!

Thanks so much!

My home stomping grounds also!

Love Westchester Airport (HPN) but will need a rental car probably to get to Norwalk. There are plenty of pricey car services. Usually HPN flights are more expensive than LGA or JFK.

Easy to get from Norwalk to New Haven via Metro North. Should be plenty of attractive housing for young people relatively close to the hospital. Also plenty of grungy dumps still … but lots of new construction apartments in the SONO area.

Connecticut Limo used to be the way to go – more recently I’ve used GO Airport Shuttle, but that may be because I am coming from north of the Merritt Parkway.

Bradley to New Haven is easy … but Norwalk would be out of the way from Bradley.

Very easy to drive from Westchester Airport to Norwalk. I’d take the Merrit Parkway to the Rte 7 connector southbound: it has an exit ramp which literally ends directly across the street from the Norwalk Hospital entrance.

Norwalk has a variety of nice areas, including the upscale, like Silvermine and Wilson’s Point and Rowayton, and the cool (SoNo), and all kinds of pleasant neighborhoods in between. Yes, there are also dumpy areas. It would be very feasible to live in other towns, too. I think a car would be necessary to live in the area. I would strongly consider it even if visiting, because it would enable him to drive around a bit and get an idea of what’s out there. The area immediately around the hospital is really not representative at all.

If he moves there, he needs to realize that Norwalk, unlike some of the surrounding communities (which are exceedingly pricey suburbs) has a range of good, bad, and in-between neighborhoods.

Unless he has a local guide helping him (such as a resident who’s been there for a year or two), it may be safest for him to work with a real estate agent when looking for housing, even if he’s only trying to rent an apartment.

I’m not as enthused as Consolation about the prospect of living in surrounding towns. The towns directly to the east (Westport), north (New Canaan), and west (Darien) of Norwalk are all very expensive. (I didn’t mention south because what’s directly south is water – Long Island Sound.)

I wasn’t necessarily talking about contiguous towns, although if we are going to do so let’s not forget Wilton. There are all kinds ov living situations in the area, depending on what he likes. He might prefer to live in a quiet accessory apartment in one of the 2- or 4-acre zones. He might prefer apartment complex. He might share a house near the water in South Norwalk.

The good news is that they provide housing accross the street from the hospital. (At least I hope that’s good news.)

It’s a reasonable area. If he has a car, which we highly recommend, it almost doesn’t matter where he’ll be. At least his commute will be non-existent!

If he lives near the hospital, he will be near a Costco, a Shop-Rite with great sales and lots of “ethnic” foods, and a huge Patel market that has EVERYTHING for those of us who love to cook Indian food. I hit the Shop-Rite and Patel’s every time I go down there. And he won’t be far from Stew Leonard’s and Penzey’s.

What more could one ask? :D

In addition to CT Limo (a lot of Yale parents have been complaining about the website the last few months) there is Go Shuttle and Q Conn. Maybe this will help:

[Yale University Travel Services](<a href=“Yale Travel Management | It's Your Yale”>Yale Travel Management | It's Your Yale)

We had an auto accident there once. : D

Q Conn’s rates are much more reasonable. Thanks!

Good news! My son made it Norwalk last week for the interview. They called him this afternoon and offered him a spot in the Yale/Norwalk Hospital physician assistant surgical residency program. Thanks again for all your help.

What great news, toledo. Congrats!

Congrats, Toledo!
