My son was just invited to interview for a residency in Newark, but it sounds like the the interview could be in either town. He has to pay travel costs, so I’m guessing it’s cheaper to fly into NYC and take the train up. Would that be accurate? They said they would supply transportation between Newark and New Haven, so I don’t think a rental car is needed. Son is thinking he should fly into Hartford, but there are no direct flights from here. Any recommendations?

How is the town of Newark? He would be there for a year if he gets the residency.

He would have to take the train from Newark into Penn Station, then subway to Grand Central to get the New Haven line. No big deal. Or, I think, he could take Amtrak from Penn Station to New Haven.

I haven’t really spent any time in Newark so cannot comment on what it is like to live. It has been a city with a lot of problems though - poverty, crime, etc.

Sorry, emilybee. I’ve got my airports mixed up with my destinations. I meant he has to get to Norwalk/New Haven. I’ll try to delete this and repost. Thanks anyway.

toledo, both Norwalk and New Haven are on the railroad line that runs direct from Grand Central Station and 125th St. and Park Ave. in NYC.

If he lands at La Guardia, he could take a city bus to 125th St. Pretty easy, pretty direct, and the trains run at least once every hour. If he lands at JFK Airport, it will take longer but he can take mass transit to Grand Central.

There used to be something called Connecticut Limo that went from NYC airports as far as New Haven. Might be a little easier to manage than subway to train with multiple changes. Look on the Yale parents’ forum.

You might want to check flights into White Plains. Jetblue flies there. He could take Connecticut Limo from WP to Norwalk and/or New Haven. he can also take Ct. Limo from LaGuardia or JFK.

Nowalk has it’s nice parts and it’s not so nice part - though it’s much improved from 20 or so years ago. There is also a recently gentrified area where younger people live.

If he has to get to Norwalk/New Haven, I would strongly suggest taking CT Limo (actually a bus most of the time these days) from either Bradley or LaGuardia. They pick you up at your terminal and take you to one of their terminus locations, of which there are many.

Cross posted with many others. I love the Westchester Airport: easy in and out. Don’t think CT limo serves them, but maybe someone else does. Metro North is the way to get between Norwalk and New Haven, definitely.

I work in a town that is next door to Norwalk. There are direct trains to Norwalk. You can take metro north from grand central for example and I’m sure that amtrak from Penn station stops there as it goes to New Haven and beyond. Norwalk is a small urban - like town. The area is costly.

Where’s he coming from? It might make more sense to take a train to NYC, rather than flying. That eliminates the inconvenience of getting from the airport to the train station. If he took a Amtrak train to NYC, he would have to go from one train station (Penn Station) to another (Grand Central) to catch a Metro North train to Connecticut, but this is easily accomplished on the subway.

If the train isn’t feasible, he should fly into one of the NYC-area airports. When you know which one, come back here and someone will tell you the most efficient way for him to get to Grand Central Station from that airport.

I think Norwalk is a dump, but that’s because I grew up there. It’s probably a perfectly OK suburb; I just don’t remember it that way.
