Information for all you Mudd applicants

Sent out to all Mudd students from the admissions office today:

"The answer is that we are absolutely swimming in applications.Last year we were excited that we had enjoyed an 11% increase in applications received from 2004-05. Sorry, we weren’t able to meet that growth - we surpassed it! We are up another 15% this year, bringing our volume to a record 2438 (at the moment, more paper apps still to be processed). So this is a cumulative growth of 28% over two years ago.

We seem to be up in lots of important categories:

up 35% in the East (not East Dorm, we mean the Atlantic)
— more travel seems to have paid off: up 70% in Maryland, up 50% in NY, etc.

up almost a third in Midwest
— spearheaded by a 50% rise in Illinois.

record number of women applicants : n = 677
– but a smaller increase in the pool (7%) than the overall rate (15%). ;-(

about even in Latino applications
– we have had big growth in recent years. Need to continue the momentum.

50% increase in applications from students of African descent.
— more African-American candidates this year than all applicants of African descent last year

Ok, take this last part with a grain of salt – lots of data entry still left to do means many records needed to fully complete the picture… BUT

SAT ranges slightly higher in Writing, and Math, more substantial rises on the SAT Critical Reading and Math2 subject tests.

ANYONE with a love for the alphabet and who enjoys shoulder-to-shoulder filing is welcome to come see us for immediate employment!

We start reading tomorrow. if you don’t see the admission counselors much - they will be home reading their eyes out. "

:) :)

I just did some quick calculations based on this data. Assuming that there is only a 15% rise, that equates to a 5% drop from last year in acceptance percentage. Keep in mind that admissions said the paper applications are still being processed, so obviously the acceptance percentage will drop even more. Also they have to expect a higher yield this year I’d assume. So HMC’s acceptance rate could easily drop 8% or so this year.

Wow! That should attract some much-deserved attention

that’s scary, i’m glad i didn’t apply there. I probably would’ve gotten straight out rejected

Just what I wanted to hear, I swear…

It’s great that Mudd is gaining recognition and everything, but why couldn’t it be next year?

awesome. for some reason, though, i am not surprised.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

more competition…
