I had my undergraduate in economics and have been taking computer science courses at a local community college to fulfill the grad program requirements at Illinois State University (which I cannot find a subforum for so I apologize if this is the wrong section). I really did not like economics during my undergrad and did very poorly 2.35 gpa, but I took the GRE once and scored 162Q/155V and have gotten A’s in my community college classes, which consisted of intro level courses on C++, Java, Assembly, and some networking classes. I talked to the community college counselor who stated ISU as a good school for systems development and isn’t too expensive so I am looking to apply this fall. I do not have a lot of courses in computer science, but I really enjoyed taking these programming courses so I just wanted to know what recommendations there are to further prepare for the application or am I out of my league in trying to apply for their systems development grad program?
Hmm is there a reason you want/need to do an MS right now?
I bet you could get a job with the classes you have already taken. And then you can decide if you need to get a masters.
You might find out you don’t need one at all! IS/IT is very hands-on learning.
(Although if you really wanted one you can do a part time masters.)
What type of jobs would I be able to get into with just intro programming classes?
You should be able to get an entry level job as a programmer or an IT consultant. If not you can try an internship and try to network your way to a full time position.
Does the grad program require/recommend work experience prior to starting?
