In a sea of bad news, there is always hope for mankind.
Xiggi, I did not watch the show. I agree that nuclear fusion, 3d printing of body parts, etc is inspiring and hopeful for the future.
As you can see, positive posts don’t go far on CC. I think many posters use CC to vent.
I like your positive attitude.
Dstark, if you are looking for positive posts, check out the exercise and the pen threads!
Did not watch the show, but will. Re: 3D printing of body parts. I do hope so! for now, teeth and bones are already being “printed.” Techies who want to solve biotech problems… are so cute in their naiveness.
Re 3d printing of body parts.
[this just happened](Robert Downey, Jr. Delivers Real 3D-Printed Bionic Arm To 7-Year-Old Boy [Video])
A prosthetic arm is not going to solve the problems with people dying while waiting for an organ transplant…
I didn’t realize the Cnn blog was about organs.
Couldn’t get it to load.
Oh EK, I dunno if it was about organs. I just saying that VC money is again not going where it is most needed. Bionic arms, of course, solve a real problem, but it is what’s underneath the skin that needs more attention. BTW, no 3D printing is really needed to make an arm prosthesis.
I follow a lot of technology areas. One of my favorite recent ones, other than the 3D hologram diagnostic you can turn in space with your hand, is a sweet story of a wounded Syrian with his jaw blown away taken to a hospital in Haifa where they computer modeled his face and jaw and then printed out new pieces of a jaw which they then implanted. He’s recovering well, can talk, is back in Syria and will return (if he can) to Haifa for teeth to be implanted so he can eat solid food.
I don’t really know much about the need for organs,
But perhaps we are getting closer to growing them as I know they are making strides re other types of tissue.
We also still need people to be organ donors.
Regenerative medicine also holds promise.( MRFM magnetic resonance force microscopy)

Its easier to read about than how China uses organs from prisoners.
I hope you can catch a rerun of today’s show. I think it is available on a PC.
Every part of the show was fascinating and, as I wrote, inspiring. What we will see in 2030 is mind boggling. The nuclear project ITER is scary in many ways. Could it be that Mars is Mars because the Martians tried to harness such a power? Is Cook thinking in buying it and relabel it iTER? /smile
Here is a different presentation of the heart printing … http://www.livescience.com/41280-3d-printing-heart.html
You don’t 3D “print” layers of human cells. You actually grow them in a 3D matrix culture. The technique is not novel, but certain nuances of it will definitely be.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/21042962/
Really, the only reason I could see why researches call it “printing” is because VCs are dumber than rocks when it comes to understanding science. 3D Printing… this they can get. Push a button on a printer, and out comes a living heart. Hey, this is not the last time science had to be dumbed diwn to get funding! ![]()
We just uninstalled AVAST and installed MacAfee instead. We’re now running a system scan, so we’ll see if anything changes. One thing AVAST had begun to do, which royally peeved me off was to push the pop up message that they had identified “an unstable plug-in”, and ask if I would like to uninstall it. I took the bait a couple of times, and each time I did, it deleted Google as my default browser, and replaced it with Yahoo. Goggle-as-evil-empire debate aside, I really like its seach engine, and absolutely detest Yahoo’s. That agenda was so naked, I could scarcely believe it. What anti-virus software do you use, and why?
How did that happen? I thought I was in the AVAST thread, so this comment was a total non-sequitur just now. Please forgive me, and moderators, if this post can be moved to that thread, I’d really appreciate it.
