I’ve heard that instate applicants are much more likely to get rejected. Is this true? And would applying early mitigate this disadvantage?

wildcat, I asked someone in Stanford admissions about this question last year, since every year people seem to wonder whether being a CA resident will help or hurt their chances. According to admissions, it is basically a neutral factor. The reason is that, although enormous numbers of highly competitive CA students apply to Stanford every year, Stanford typically admits about 35-39% of each entering class from its pool of CA applicants, in accordance with the university founders’ expressed wishes. So this significant representation from CA in each admitted class offsets the huge CA applicant pool to an extent, making the chances of admission among instate vs. OOS applicants essentially equivalent. Good luck.

Thanks mang! Good to know.
