So S1 graduated in May, but has not found a job in his field. Has a “pay the rent” job while he job hunts for the real thing. He is living with his roommates in the same house that he lived in the last two years, has the exact same stuff, etc. He has had student insurance with CSI for the the last four years and we have been very happy with it (two claims, a bike and computer), both handled promptly, good rates, low deductible. Ideally we would like to continue this insurance or get him something similar, but it doesn’t look like they will cover kids in this case. Any ideas?? He checked with his local State Farm office and they want more than double what we have been paying, with a $500 deductible, which on his $4000 worth of stuff hardly seems prudent. He would go without insurance, but his computer is top of the line and if he loses it he would be in deep trouble – so he wants some assurance at least on the computer – the rest of his stuff is pretty minor or is irreplaceable.

Renter’s insurance??

Try Travellers…depending on the state (location), he should be able to find something much more reasonable. Ours has coverage with them and pays about $175 a year for coverage of about $25,000 including ID theft protection. Our elderly parent(also rents) pays about $125 for about the same coverage. I used Travellers almost 30 yrs ago for renter’s insurance and think I paid about the same, maybe a little less. Renter’s insurance rates don’t change too much!
