Intel Scholarship for Employee's Children chances?

It awards up to 400 people worldwide. Intel has over 107,000 employees. My family’s financials are pretty solid, so they don’t fit into the need-based category which is given to 50% of the winners. The other 50% is the merit-based. I told my mom that I am not cut out to win based on my grades. I always get above average grades, which is never enough to win anything. For college students they look at transcripts only.

Last semester, I took 4 classes and got 3 As and 1 B+, which was my best semester so far. I transferred credits from community college too, so I have an overall GPA and university GPA. My Overall is a 3.515 and university GPA is 3.657. The extra-curricular background isn’t that great either. I’ve done a few activities here and there and did not hold an office position. I think if I don’t get a 3.8-4.0, it’s an automatic disqualification.

Winners cannot apply again and this is my second attempt, but I think if I’m competing on a worldwide basis, there’s no way I will be one of the 200 people who are given a scholarship especially when Intel has over 100k employees. My mom, who works there, urged me to apply a second time. I want to know if any of you have won and would like to know your stats (GPA, extra-curriculars, and SAT if you applied as a high school senior).

I feel like this extremely limited scholarship program is above my league. Obviously, I’m gonna aim for the best grades I can get, but it just seems like a long shot to win this. But my mom tells me to apply anyway which is bugging me because she doesn’t listen when I tell her the chances are really low.

What is the harm in applying? You don’t have any chance if you don’t apply.

Update: After looking at my rejection letter from last year, it stated that over 1,200 were received, which is not too bad if 400 of them are given awards. I just don’t like applying with false hope.
