Intel STS award for scholarship?

hey, when i got my Intel STS award info, it said that it was cash, and you'd have to pay taxes on it next year. So, can it still count as a college scholarship? So, how would taxes factor into that and stuff?

Scholarships are taxable if they can be used for living expenses -- they have to be reported on tax forms like any other kind of income. (Alas.)

I think what they mean by cash is that it's not one of those scholarships that pays directly to MIT without you ever seeing the money, you just get the check and use it however you like - in this case, to help pay for MIT.

hey tachobg, thanks. i thought that was the case, but just wanted to be sure.
